Violet is a gorgeous blue toned electric purple that fades out to a flattering soft lavender colour. If you like cool tones then Violet is a fantastic choice and looks wonderful with all skin tones.

It’s packed with pigment without being too dark, so expect a bit of colour rub-off in the first week or so after dyeing. You may find your bedding and towels pick up some colour so it’s advisable to take precautions against this (although staining is usually temporary).

Directions works best on hair that has been pre-lightened to pale blonde. Some paler shades as well as toners will only work on very light hair. Apply directly to dry or slightly damp, freshly washed (but not conditioned hair) using a tint brush for best results, or use gloved fingers to spread the dye evenly through your hair. Allow to process for at least 15 minutes and do not allow to dry out. Rinse thoroughly. To avoid temporary staining to the skin, apply a layer of Vaseline around your hairline and ears before applying the colour.

Reviews of Directions Violet

  • This was the first directions shade I ever used, and it cme out extremely bright violet/blue in different light conditions. It stayed in for an impressive amount of time, and is a very similar shade to neon blue.
  • First directions shade I ever used too!! And to be honest I can't say I liked it that much. It turned out pretty blue... people kept asking me whether my hair is purple or blue. I think plum is better. Plus, it looks pretty bad when it fades. All grey and scruffy.
  • When I used this it was very pale, and I rather liked it. But agreeing with Haemoglobin, it can come out blueish.
  • It was a nice colour, but it didn't last very long. The faded colour wasn't too bad either, but with it not lasting too long, that was the colour i remember most.
  • I really love this color although I'm a big fan of purple. The thing I love most is it's so vivid and I love how it looks blue sometimes. It actually stayed in my hair forever I love this purple!
  • It was a very pretty purple, but didn't last long enough. It's funny, that Directions Neon Blue looks more violet on me than Violet... And lasts longer.
  • I find that most purple dyes bleed quite a lot, no matter how I wash or process them...But this dye soaked right into my hair :] When I rinsed it out, the water ran clear within a few seconds! The colour hasn't rubbed off onto clothes or washed into the other colours in my hair, and I haven't noticed any fading yet~
  • Love this dye. It's lasting well and you can mix it with conditioner like I did to get a lovely lilac colour. I really love directions dye <3
  • I got a lot of compliments when I used this! And it lasted for about 2 weeks which I was very happy with! I would definitely use this again one day! I also really love directions dye!
  • Good color full of pigments. I did not use it on my full head but only some strands and I like it. :)
  • This is an amazing colour <3 When I go purple again this will be the colour I choose (: I had it for a month and a bit and it was still pretty much as vibrant as when I first did it (except for a couple bits that faded faster)! It didn't rub onto anything. It is a very blue based purple but I always thought on me it was obviously purple. I would recommend it in a heartbeat (:!
  • This is a very interesting colour. It came out a very dark indigo on my partner's beard and hasn't faded much. On my head, diluted and used as a rinse, it has come out a true violet colour. I think if I had a light enough base it would have turned out much brighter.
  • Again, this was the first directions colour I ever used. It came out as quite a dark purple colour for me, which got brighter after every wash. It lasted about a month and a half until it eventually faded to a lovely lilac colour.
  • I diluted this violet to get a more of a pastel shade, but damn- This stuff sticked to my hair and made me bright purple.. I thought I'd tone it down by washing it as I went along, but it turned into an ugly shade of grey-ish blue (even though it was allmost bleach-white when I started). I wouldn't recommend this for diluting as it faded within a week (only one wash) to that ugly colour. (don't get me wrong, I don't mind fading.. but at least fade into something pretty! XD) A second thing I came across is that, when I was bleaching my roots, it reacted so bad. The little pieces that overlapped turned into some kind of lime/mint green! And this was when the dye was allready faded. I decided to bleach my whole head (aka- whole head went green). Luckily I had some pink to counteract so now I am blonde again. Pro's: Gives a bright colour, even when diluted A LOT Cons: Doesn't fade to a nice colour (on my hair) and turns green whenever bleach or lighteners touch it.
  • Impressive, deep purple colour. In person it looked purple, but for some reason it would always look blue in pictures... If you dilute it, you'll get a nice, lilac colour that unfortunately won't last for a very long time.
  • I liked using this dye diluted rather than the Lavender or Lilac as it went much farther and lasted longer.
  • I absolutely love Violet. Yes it fades fast, but all purples do anyway. It's so vibrant. If you bleach and tone your hair it comes out as a true warm purple, not blue as others said. If you do not tone it well then the brassy yellow will make some strange orangey-purple on your hair.
  • Today I did a violet dip dye on my turqouise hair (after bleaching the tips first ofcourse) and I'm very pleased with the colour! It seems to be the most true purple / violet in the direction line of purple colours. I've had a streak of this colour before and it faded slowly, taking about three months to fade to a pale lilac; it never changed colour while fading, it just went from a strong violet shade to a lilac shade and then closer and closer to white. I'm very pleased with this colour :) I think it'll remain my go-to purple colour.
  • I adore this purple, because I love blue tones! I'm not a fan of pinkish purples or magentas. It is borderline blue, especially when it fades silvery. When I did a bleach bath, however, it did go light green, so you have to be careful when touching up your roots. The Directions dyes I've tried so far though have no given me any problems staining my skin or pillowcases! And Violet lasted a good 2-3 weeks.
  • I had first a verry beautiful shade of purple, close to plum but a bit cooler. After a few washes it faded to a blueish dark pastel with some purple shades. After two months my hair looks like it had been dyed turquoise. Now I have pastel green/blue hair. It's hard to get this shade out of my hair. I liked how it faded first, but I wished it had faded to a more purple pastel. Not a bad dye, but I prefer plum.
  • Used this on virgin hair that was a light brown. Whilst it did go purple it faded really fast. Like one wash and it was half gone. If also left the natural blonde highlights of the hair a kind of dirty grey colour. Overall I didn’t like the colour. It might stick for longer or look a better shade on bleached hair. One plus is it didn’t bleed much at all. No transfer onto clothes and bed sheets etc.
