Neon Blue is a beautiful rich electric blue that will leave bleached hair looking vibrant and shiny. Because of its purple tones, it’s a great choice for covering darker, golden blonde. The violet hues of Neon Blue will be more noticeable on top of pale blonde hair and you’ll find that the colour becomes more violet as it fades. It’s these violet tones that give Neon Blue its beautiful glowing effect.

Neon Blue is richly pigmented so expect some temporary staining to your skin and shower when rinsing it off. Using a petroleum jelly product like Vaseline or a thick moisturiser before colouring will help prevent dye run-off from staining your skin. It’s a good idea to keep your dyeing gloves handy for rinsing or risk colouring your nails!

Directions works best on hair that has been pre-lightened to pale blonde. Some paler shades as well as toners will only work on very light hair. Apply directly to dry or slightly damp, freshly washed (but not conditioned hair) using a tint brush for best results, or use gloved fingers to spread the dye evenly through your hair. Allow to process for at least 15 minutes and do not allow to dry out. Rinse thoroughly. To avoid temporary staining to the skin, apply a layer of Vaseline around your hairline and ears before applying the colour.

Reviews of Directions Neon Blue

  • I had this for a while (see my timeline) and it is a really nice blue/violet, kind of like directions violet, though starting out with more blue tones. It lasted well, and didnt stain.
  • My first unnatural dye! Looks fantastic and so rich when it's new, but fades to a sort of violet after a week or so. I have to top mine up every week and it leaves my hair really shiny and with a deep blue-purple that just pops out at you.

  • I thought I'd bought the wrong colour when I first opened up a tub of Neon Blue - the dye itself looks a pale murky lilac! Unusually for a veggie dye it almost seems to develop as it's on the hair. The swatch above is pretty accurate on bleached hair, and it looks amazing fresh! For a blue, it doesn't fade too quickly. I've used it mixed with a drop of Plum which also boosts the staying power... One of my favourites :o)
  • Starts off as this amazing purple toned blue & quickly fades to grey within the first week. Its a real shame that this has no lasting power at all because the colour it goes after the first wash is perfect
  • Loved this colour. From the minute i put it on, till it faded to a violet/ash blue it was amazing. Very good value for money i think and as i didn't mind the faded colour, it lasted a while. I have now converted my friend who is now using this colour.
  • It always goes pure violet on my hair instead of blue. But I really like the color anyway. Stays for a long time... And in the end it makes my hair almost silver. :)
  • I'm afraid I hated this dye. It came out a very dark purpley blue on my hair, and in any area that wasn't bleached to pure platinum blonde it faded to brown after the first wash. Even in the well bleached areas it faded to a murky grey after only a week or so. I was pretty dissapointed.....
  • I found out that mixing it with another blue like atlantic, it gives the best results. The violet it has eliminates the yellow tones and makes atlantic blue a little darker and shiny. The colour of neat neon blue turned out very dark, nice blue, but I agree that it's lasting power is meh.
  • My hair was just about white when applied, and it turned violet. I don't care really, just thought I'd share.
  • More purple then blue, but still goes alright. Not my favourite colour, but not to bad either :)
  • This is a very intense and beautiful blue. (it's a nice mix of ultramarine and cobalt blue) The staying power is great... maybe too great. And it does not bleed like other blues do. I left it for 2 hours and came out too dark. You almost couldn't see it in the dark, but under light it was gorgeous. It faded to an even prettier blue, still rich after 3 months. Now the problem was, when I wanted to change the color... This blue is of the devil. It didn't fade... even after washing with anti dandruff shampoo and hot water for a month...even after BLEACHING.... You either have to cut it, or go close to the color range.. like green, or purple... So I still recommend it for it was nice, but don't leave it more than an hour. This color is very strong. ps: BUT, my all time fav blue is directions midnight blue. It was perfection. Even if it did bleed like hell. :P
  • First time i applied the color it went lilac GREY! Second time i applied i used almost the whole box and it went beautifully perfect. this color requires you to apply a lot of it in order it will be the exact color.
  • I put this neon blue over my faded violet and it hid it completely as this is a very rich vivid shade. I dyed it 3 months ago now and it has barely changed at all! The staying power is worrying me now because I'm feeling my temporary change isn't so temporary without me bleaching the life out of it. For a not so temporary change I would recommend this colour as like I say even three months down the line the colour is still great. Some people have said their's faded quickly maybe mine has stuck like glue because I put it on dry hair (mixed with silicone free conditioner 50/50 mix).
  • I just put it on over my very faded old blue (that I had done at the hairdressers). First of all, there's almost no smell (my biggest concern!), it went on LIKE A DREAM(!), and the colour is AMAZING! I did this with some streaks of the plum and the dark tulip. The dark tulip didn't show up much but this with the plum looks so good! I still have a slightly blue hand, though, and my bathtub looked a bit like an alien bloodbath when I washed it out, but a quick scrub with some Vanish liquid, and it came right out, so no issues there. Now to test they staying power...
  • I put this diluted over a magenta/dark pink colour and it turned the hair a mix of purple, indigo and bright blue but that was because the colour underneath was uneven. It stained the head bright blue and is a bit of a nightmare to get off skin and the bath needed bleaching. The blue came through more each time I washed it so that the hair lost it’s purple hue and was very indigo/inky blue.
  • This is my second attempt at using this colour - the first time was on my daughter, this time I tried it on myself. I used this neat over a mid green and freshly bleached yellow roots. This looks VERY purple in the pot and when I was applying it. The end result wasn’t something I was happy with at all. The green turned a dark blue/purple leaning way more towards purple which I didn’t want and the yellow roots went a muddy blue - in some places the blue didn’t fully cover the yellow which was odd as I expected if anything a blue to turn the yellow hair green. After one wash my yellow roots were coming through in spots and I hated it so I bleached bathed my hair which turned my entire head back to green pretty much instantly whereas when I used this on my daughter’s hair even with bleaching her hair remained blue so it definitely has different effects depending on your hair type, how much you’ve bleached and what the underlying colour you had before was.
  • This was darker than I expected, and I even added conditioner (at a ratio of about 1:3). It's equivalent in color to Special Effects Blue Velvet after 5 washes or so. I dyed over very faded Blue Velvet (mostly pastel pinkish-purple after bleach touched it) plus newly-bleached roots. So far I've washed it twice and seen no real fading. I use sulfate-free shampoos & paraben-free conditioners but don't use freezing cold water. It may be the conditioner but this isn't bleeding nearly as badly as Special Effects does at first. It was much easier to clean up in my bathroom and on my skin than the SE was. So far I'm very pleased since this is much easier to find than SE!
