Directions works best on hair that has been pre-lightened to pale blonde. Some paler shades as well as toners will only work on very light hair. Apply directly to dry or slightly damp, freshly washed (but not conditioned hair) using a tint brush for best results, or use gloved fingers to spread the dye evenly through your hair. Allow to process for at least 15 minutes and do not allow to dry out. Rinse thoroughly. To avoid temporary staining to the skin, apply a layer of Vaseline around your hairline and ears before applying the colour.

Reviews of Directions Lilac

  • Used this today to tone my hair. It is a bit of a dirty lavender colour and I think it would fade very very quickly. I wasn't fond of it, but mixed with conditioner it makes a good toner. x
  • i attempted to dye my hair this colour but it didn't really go right. i have shoulder length light blonde hair (dyed&bleached) and there was only really enough for my roots and fringe, which meant that was the only bit that dyed!! it came out after a few days of extreme washing and pouring citrus juice on it so it doesn't hold too long however i think if i get enough dye and do it again it'll come out okay. the colour was actually really pretty, i would recommend mixing with conditioner (purple based) to tone it down a bit :-) 3 stars
  • Came out after less than a day :(
  • Very beautiful, blue toned pale purple. I dyed one of my hair extensions this colour and mixed the rest of the dye with other colours, so I can't say much about the staying power of this, however, it is a very pretty colour and i loved this when i went through my "pastel hair" phase. I dyed my hair a very similar colour, but used a diluted version of Directions Violet, which came out after one wash, (the ends looked grey)
  • I only got good results with this dye when i didn't dilute it AT ALL and mixed it with equal parts Lavender, for some reason that seemed to work a lot better.
  • Tried this dye out yesterday and even during application it seemed like some of my hair just wasn't taking the dye at all; these parts ended up a silvery grey where as the parts that took the dye better actually did end up a pretty cool purple. Seems to be fading fast though :( I honestly don't know if this was down to my hair, but as other people have reported similar issues so perhaps it is the dye? As others have also said, it might be better either mixed with another, deeper purple shade or on it's own/with conditioner as a toner - it definitely seems to work very well as a toner! :)
