If you want a nice strong blue that’s not too violet and won’t fade green then Atlantic Blue is for you. We’ve found it lasts well (around 6 weeks on bleached hair) and fades gracefully to a paler blue. The colour in the swatch is based on colour applied to pale blonde hair. If you have warmer tones in your hair expect it to be a bit more turquoise.

Directions works best on hair that has been pre-lightened to pale blonde. Some paler shades as well as toners will only work on very light hair. Apply directly to dry or slightly damp, freshly washed (but not conditioned hair) using a tint brush for best results, or use gloved fingers to spread the dye evenly through your hair. Allow to process for at least 15 minutes and do not allow to dry out. Rinse thoroughly. To avoid temporary staining to the skin, apply a layer of Vaseline around your hairline and ears before applying the colour.

Reviews of Directions Atlantic Blue

  • really really good dye. it comes out darker then it shows, but it will fade evenly to the color is says it is and will then stay like that for a really long time then slowly fade to a slightly faded version and will then stay like that forever. i've had it in for about 5 weeks now and it hasn't changed all that much.
  • pretty nice shade of blue. I'd love to see it on bleached or lighter hair but showed up as a darker (yet still awesome) petrol type blue on my unlightened mousey brown hair. Still pretty bold and vivid blue shade and looks amazing in sunlight where it gets bright blue highlights over the darker shade. Love it and definately recommend this dye!
  • (oops, forgot the rating)
  • I used this on stripped hair that was blondy white at the roots and pale orangy blonde with hints of purple that were nearly gone, and it turned it like a greeny teal/turqouise colour! I love how it came out on me I think it looks really nice~ Before I had this colour, I had Direction's Plum in my hair and looked really nice, but it'd faded quite a lot and from swimming a few weeks back....When my mum put it on it went dark blue like the colour, but paler in parts and even kind of greeny lol. Awesome dye anyways!
  • I really loved this color when I first did it but for some reason it just didn't hold on to my hair for very long. It started fading pretty after only a week ):.
  • the best blue dye that i've found. doesn't fade out stupidly fast like the stargazer i found but doesn't resfuse to leave hair for love or money like crazy colour or scream. the best if you want a good blue that you can dye over in a month
  • This is a gorgeous, vivid blue. It covered my bleached out Atomic Pink without going purple.
  • I used this colour diluted and it gave me a wonderful baby blue, hang on reasonably well 2-3 weeks maybe (diluted) and faded into a nice silver shade.
  • This colour came out so so vibrant, the only bad thing about it is that it wont stop coming off onto my skin. I have to wipe the colour off my face and ears and hands constantly which is kind of annoying....but the colour came out amazing! Now that I have had it for almost two weeks, the colour is not as dark, but still a very nice blue, kind of petrol-ish, turquoise-ish. Definitely recommend!
  • This is the first color I've used and it turned out really great! I used it on bleached hair and left it in for 4-5 hours. I haven't used any particular color shampoos or conditioner that is suppose to sustain the color and my blue hair is still very vibrant after two weeks. It has just gotten a little less dark, in my opinion. Like I said, it's the first dye I've ever used and I am so happy with the result. So if you want blue hair (even though you're a total hair color noob, like me), just go for it :). I'm telling this because I was recommended not to use blue if I wasn't experienced with coloring before. But hey..! I went for it and I don't regret it!
  • A lovely reliable blue. It starts out much darker, but fades to the colour in the swatch above after 2-3 washes, then stays that way for a good long while. I dyed right over some leftover pink with it and it covered it all up with no colour interference.
  • really good dye, although I thought it would be more intense, turns out it is a tiny bit greenish, I would say it is more turquoise than blue. But very beautiful anyway.
  • I really recommed this dye. At first it's darker than the photos shown but after a few washes it comes to a bit greenish lighter blue and stays like that a very long time. The only inconvenient is that you have to bleach your hair to a very pale blond to prevent it turns out too much turquoise or green.
  • I really LOVED this color when mixed 50/50 with Directions -Turquoise. It came to be the most perfect shade of vibrant bubblegum-blue! Wasn't too dark, or too light. the color stayed consistent through a whole month and even then remained as a lighter more turquoise shade of blue. Absolutely lovely indeed.
  • Gorgeous blue but doesn't budge- If you want to commit to blue: take this one! Didn't fade to some ugly green but stayed pretty and faded to a light slight turqoise blue :)
  • Beautiful sky blue colour that lasts, as in it stained my hair.
  • This is one of my favourite dyes. It instantly became my go-to blue after I first tried it! I've had great results with it, even when applied on an unevenly bleached base. It turned out a beautiful bright blue on the well belached parts and a nice petrol/teal blue on the parts that hadn't bleached so well. It's a pretty forgiving dye. It also had a long lifespan (over a month) and after that faded to a nice silvery turqoise. The dye is pretty dark and pigmented on its own so it will still come out a vivid blue when diluted with conditioner, this also reduces bleeding. Since this is a pure blue colour it works great as a mixer too. A great staple to keep at hand in your dye collection!
  • It's such a GORGEOUS color, deep, rich and super vibrant! I read the reviews before using it, so I mixed a tiny drop of Rose Red to prevent the greenish blue shade when it starts fading. It lasts for a long time and it doesn't stain, I totally recommend this to anyone who's looking for a true blue color!
  • It comes out an amazing bright neon blue colour. The colour comes out darker than the swatch given on this website and is very pigmented the dye has one of the best staying powers out of any dye I've used in the past, on my hair it will last literally months still very bright after many washes. Another thing what I like about this dye is that it is a very true blue when it fades it remains blue but gets lighter/paler as there seems to be no green or purple bases in it. The dye does bleed a moderate amount when you straighten your hair, use hair products or if it gets wet and gets on your face and fingers but I found this usually stops after about 3-5 washes. I got the same results when my hair was a pale blonde or a yellowish colour so my hair didn't need to be lightened to the the max.
  • Tried this dye based on the great reviews. I found it a little too solid and difficult to work into my hair, and the results are patchy. Other than one bad experience with overly diluted Manic Panic early on, I've never had an issue at all with a color sticking to my hair, but this came out mottled on me. The parts that work are a gorgeous dark cobalt blue, and I love it! But some parts are almost an ashy blue-ish teal. Also, I have short hair and it took almost two jars to cover it, which seemed like a lot of dye (and a lot of expense). My hair is not damaged, and I put this on over a medium turquoise base.
  • Love the vibrant blue and the colour lasted almost 1 month for me even though I was using a dandruff shampoo!! Definitely one of the best!!
  • I used this on my daughter over hair that was prelightened and was a reddish/pink shade, I had diluted the Atlantic blue with conditioner with the view to making her hair a shade of purple but despite the dye being what I thought was diluted enough, the blue overtook the previous colour and she ended up with only a few strands of purple and the rest a dark blue. I tried fading it with dandruff shampoo, vitamin c treatments and even bleached bathed it but we only ever got it to a more vibrant, brighter blue shade. I tried one more bleaching and again the blue would not budge. In the end we gave up as we didn’t want to damage her hair anymore and she’s basically left growing the colour out. This is honestly the most powerful blue I’ve used and I wouldn’t use it again unless I was sure I wanted to commit to a blue as this sucker lasts forever.
  • I have since used this on a medium brown hair that’s more on the darker side, not thinking it would show up at all to be honest but it does - just that it comes out green but that was to be expected on unbleached hair. It actually turned out a pretty, dark green that reminded me almost of Alpine green on my daughter’s hair.
