Finding the right brand of dyeby 1fastnursePosted 1 week, 4 days ago
I have been dyeing my hair since I was 16. Let's just say it's been a few years and keep my current age out of it. ;-) I've used a variety of brands... Pravana, Arctic Fox, Manic Panic, and others. I love pravana but I hate how much it transfers onto anything my head touches for 2+ weeks. I was going to try Directions and mix Rubine and Poppy red to get the color I'm aiming for but I'm finding out that it's difficult to get it in a timely manner in the US. What brand of dye do you use/recommend? How bad does it transfer onto everything afterward?

I use a variety of different brands, and I generally find that each brand has their ups and downs. I like Punky as a US option for Directions shades. They aren't exactly the same formula, but they are a similar in most of their colours, including the two you mentioned. If you're worried about run-off, I'd suggest diluting your dye mix in conditioner. Your hair can only absorb so much colour, so you don't need it to be the full level of pigmentation as in the pot, especially if you leave it in at least an hour. For those two shades, you can probably use half as much conditioner as dye. For darker shades like Punky Plum or Pravana Violet, you can do equal parts dye and conditioner or even more than that.
