Wanting to tone hair darker. Help!by TCRJPosted 1 week, 5 days ago
My hair is currently my natural colour (about 7.13 medium ash blonde) at the roots and lighter/bleached ombre at the ends (about 8.13 light ash blonde). I really want to go a bit darker, more like a light-medium ash brown, but I don't want it to be permanent. I've thought about doing a semi-permanent colour, but decided to tone it first and see how I go. I normally do this at the salon, but it's just getting too expensive.
I've experimented a lot dying my hair dark red, dark brown, pink, purple etc. but never used a proper toner with developer (pretty much only used box dyes before, when I was young and dumb lol). So I think a 10 developer would suit best for this since I don't want to lift my colour? Also, how would I go about this? Any tips on good light ash brown colours to buy? In what ratio should I mix it? Do I put it on dry or wet hair?
Thanks for your help!

Are you hoping to match your ends to your roots or go a bit darker all over? I prefer to dye over dry hair, but I haven't used permanent dyes/toners in a long time, so I'm not sure what the formulas suggest. I'd probably go with the suggestions in the directions for a strand test and adjust as necessary.
I've had relatively good experiences with subtle changes using the Redken Shades EQ line. They are demi-permanents (using 10 vol developer) and the coverage is relatively sheer so you don't need to worry as much about going too dark. They also wash out pretty well, so they are good for a low-commitment thing. I'm not sure the right colour without seeing a photo of your base and your end goal, but I think their colour chart is pretty reliable to pin down the undertone you want. I'd probably get one shade that's your goal level and one that's a level lighter. That way, if your ends soak up too much colour, you have room to go lighter and you can mix the two as needed. Strand tests are going to be key here.

Thanks for your reply Vivienne!
I'm wanting to go darker all over. I've attached a photo of my hair now, it's kinda this mousy colour, but not super ashy. I've also attached a couple photos of what I would want, although it was quite hard finding a good photo of what I want so something in between the two I guess.
I'll check out Redken for sure, thanks for your tips. Would you say to apply it on the ends first or roots first?
