Olaplex 2 vs Olaplex 3 and How to Fix Bandingby dpackerPosted 2 weeks, 2 days ago
My hair is naturally medium brown, and I have blonde highlights on my top layers...more blonde highlights than I actually want. Since I haven't been able to go to the salon, it doesn't look great as it's growing out. I signed up for eSalon to get some color for my roots. I selected a nice ashy medium brown that I thought would match my base color. They said it was too dark and sent me something lighter that had both ash and golden tones it.
My plan was to color my roots with the eSalon color and use a highlight kit from L'oreal to add some highlights to some of the grown out areas. I used the eSalon color and ended up with hot roots (they were really copper). I've used purple shampoo a few times over the last week, washing it a little more than I normally would. They are getting pretty close to not being so noticeable. I also have a couple bands (the copper, some medium brown (I didn't color all the way down to the previous color), and the light brown / blonde that my stylist put in before.
I just watched a video where a stylist was trying to do what I want to do -- keep some of my highlights and color the rest of my hair a brown similar to my base color. She washed the customer's hair with a clarifying shampoo, then used Olaplex 2 in foils on the wet hair on the sections of blonde they wanted to keep. Then she applied a brown color to the rest of the customer's hair. That result came out really well, so I'm thinking of trying that method. eSalon is helping by sending me a darker brown than what they sent before and only including ash (no gold) so that I will get more of the color that I need. I'm still not sure it's the right color for me (we'll see), but they are trying really hard to help me fix it.
1 - Now that the hot roots seem to be toned down (I'm hoping they will be more so once I shampoo a couple more times before I color), is it okay to put the brown over it and the other bands (once I put foil over the highlights I want to keep), or will I still have weird bands?
2 - As a regular person (not a stylist), I can't seem to find Olaplex 2. Can I use Olaplex 3, or do I really need to find some Olaplex 2 to ensure that my hair isn't damaged?
3 - At what stage would it be okay to use a highlight kit to extend my highlights back up near my roots in the places where I want to keep the highlights? Do I do that before the other or a few days after? I have a L'oreal highlight kit for caramel highlights.
4 - Is there a better method for coloring my hair that doesn't involve coloring all of my highlights? I do have some gray, but it's only around my temples and in a few other areas. I don't grow a gray root line. They are sporadic and somewhat match the blonde that my stylist had been using (that was her intent).
Any help would be appreciated. I'm working from home, so I don't have to go out a lot, but I don't expect to go to the salon for a while (it's still kind of bad here in our area), so I would like my hair to look decent.
I'm not crazy about the idea of including photos of what my hair looks like right now, but I figure I will get better assistance if I do. These were taken to send to eSalon for advice on which color to use and to show them my hot roots when it didn't work. The color of my hot roots was the day I did the root touchup, after shampooing once with the purple shampoo (I didn't have any blue shampoo). They are much less obvious now.
Thanks in advance for any help.
