Color Oops and bleach?by SummerraePosted 3 months, 1 week ago
Ok so I used Color Oops about 5 days ago, obviously I have quite a few problems with it! My hair STINKS- so I’m wondering what to do in order to get that out. And I’m also trying to go blond, my hair is at a nice caramel brown color but for some reason it feels like the color oops is somehow stopping my hair from lightening? I’ve done at least 4 test strands with bleach using 2 at 20 volume for 30 minutes and 2 and 30 volume for 20/25 minutes and no lightening is in sight. What do I do?!

The way Color Oops is that it essentially reverses the reaction that happens when you mix dye with developer. It means that the dye molecules become colourless and can be rinsed out. However, the dye can still re-oxidize when exposed to developer like in bleach, so you need to make sure it's actually rinsed out of your hair. What's probably happening is that the developer is re-oxidizing the dye, but the bleach is lightening it at the same time, so it seems like nothing is happening.
The rinsing required is pretty intense. I usually shampoo my hair once a day for seven days after colour remover and rinse in water as hot as I can stand. You can check if you've gotten out all of dye if you do a strand test with just developer and see if it darkens within a minute.
As you noted, you will probably need more bleach to reach your goal, but you should be sure to have a backup plan, because it may not always be possible to reach blonde after using a darker permanent dye.
