Trying to go gray, what level am I now? Brassy, should I give up?by iiweazlePosted 7 months, 2 weeks ago
I'm naturally a level 2 who has been coloring my hair with Onyx by shades to cover gray for years. So I've decided to embrace my gray but now the problem is after trying to remove the color twice I'm left brassy and orange. What do you guys think will happen if I put Ion Titanium over what I am now? I'm ready to give up and throw some pravana magenta or wild orchid over it or just go back to black? Any magical ideas?

You definitely need more lift before going grey, since you really want a base with no orange tones, and ideally totally platinum. You're at a level 5-6 right now, with the lightest areas around a level 7. You want to be at a 10, though you can get away with a little bit of level 9 if you have a darker shade to blend.
It's not always possible to go to grey/white/pastels if you've been dyeing your hair a lot of permanent dyes, but if you're using the Redken Shades range, you might have some more luck, since it's a demi and might have a bit less staining. At this point, assuming you've rinsed enough, I'd try a strand test with bleach on the darkest regions and see if you can get enough lift for a level 10 with an acceptable amount of damage. That's the colour of the inside of a banana peel. If so, I'd just bleach it. Remember that colour can re-oxidise after a colour remover if you haven't rinsed all the dye molecules out of your hair. If it darkens in the presence of developer, you need to rinse more before committing to bleach all over.
I'd probably still keep the purple on hand as a backup plan. Magenta/purple over what you have now will go more reddish burgundy, but if you can get a yellow gold base, even if it's not light enough for silver, you can get a more true purple.

Yay for embracing your greys! Hope you find a lot of good inspiration and don´t feel discouraged.
I think that there´s too much yellow in your color for silver/grey dye to take. Would you consider bleaching it a bit? If you apply in thin sections it should be quite effective, maybe a strand test will help you evaluate damage and results.
Whatever happens, remember than with short hair in few months the transition will be over and all that you will be left with is your natural color, just don´t get scared and don´t dye the new growth. I think its cool when people grow their natural grey ombre-style (if you are curious, there is a beautiful instagram page with various lady growing their color this way; https://www.instagram.com/grombre/?hl=it). Maybe it will be more fun to have half of your hair magenta and purple than brass blonde. I´ve heard good things about Pravana, but I know for sure that Stargazer Magenta fades really fast, so I´m not going to recommend it to you. Best luck in everything, keep us updated <3
