Roots to blonde: HL or bleach?Posted 7 months, 2 weeks ago
I recently got my hair back to blonde by removing semi permanent hair colors and my roots are so long, almost 3 inches. I wanted to use a high color to lift them hoping to avoid hot roots and overlap breakage from bleach. I'm very familiar with bleach but I have never used a high lift color before. Im around a level 6 in natural hair. My worry with bleach is being left with a ring around my head because my roots are so long and I'm worried about overlapping the already bleached hair and having breakage.
Would I be better off using a high lift color or bleach? Or even starting with a high lift color and then going in with a 10 vol bleaching?

I usually stick to bleach for lifting because I feel like I have an easier time predicting lift with them. I'd probably just apply the bleach to everything except the last quarter to a half inch nearest to your scalp, let it process for a bit, then apply to the last bit for the end. Timing depends on what you start with, but when I did my black roots, it would usually take about 20-30 minutes for the bit closest to my scalp to get to platinum.
I think high-lifts give you a little more leeway since they dont have as much lift, but honestly, I think they'd still give you hot roots if you applied them all at once. They might be a bit easier on banding, though. Whatever you do, just strand test so you can get the timing right. Also, pre-sectioning your hair helps so you can finish the application quicker.
