Fixing My Nightmare Hair ;-; (violet/red, orange, ashy mint color)by jiminniePosted 5 months, 4 weeks ago
So I'm just going to start off by saying that I went to a salon and got my virgin black long thick asian hair bleached twice and then dyed completely navy which I LOVED. It washed out completely after 3 washes so my friends and I grabbed 2 bottles of etude house blue dye and my hair came out GREEN. Not mint green, not khaki, but spring grass green like fresh seaweed green. I honestly didn't mind too much but then I had to get ready for job interviews and showing up with grass as hair doesn't really make the best impression.
Likewise, around 10 days ago I went to a different hair salon to get rid of said green hair. They had a sale going on for scalp treatment + bleach for $58. I do my research before hand and this place has over 4.7/5 stars and 1.7k reviews. I also looked up online how to get rid of green hair and most sources said that bleach was the best method likewise I went with that route. The colorist is nice and a bit timid at hindsight but I trusted her to do a good job since she's the professional. She kept recommending me to do the premium bleach instead of the regular one because apparently it'll get the green out better? So my naive ass agrees. I tell her to avoid my roots bc I had around 3cm of black roots but I was planning to do a shadow root at home. I even showed her several photos of what I wanted where the hair had black shadow roots and blonde hair.
She says okay but regardless of my warning she still places the bleach very close to my scalp and goes over partial if not at least half of my roots. I'm quite softspoken so I dont say anything because once again she's ths professional and I trusted her. After she washed it out my hair was mint and some parts were bright green?? and my roots were ORANGE. Like road cone neon orange. I'm kind of speechless and ask her is there any way to get rid of the green.
She tells me the only way for the green to completely disappear is to dye my entire head violet purple. RED FLAG. I knew that red is supposed to cancel green to a neutral color and purple is usually used to tone yellow. In the spur of the moment I agree to do the purple. She tells me to also get the premium purple as the dye will last longer and not fade as much. My naive ass is like sure as long as you get rid of the green. Low and behold my hair does come how a gorgeous violet. I pay and leave content.
I don't wash my hair often because so many hair stylists have told me to only wash it once or twice a week. I wash it out only twice. No shampoo. Just deep conditioner. I kid you not my hair faded so fast and it turned out. Drum roll. SEAWEED GREEN. Not even the mint green after the bleach but the straight up GRASS that I had before. My roots, front section, and bangs are faded to a purple gray with what was orange bands to now violet red. I get upset and call the salon for the seaweed hair.
My colorist tells me to come in and she'll take a look. So I go in today and she says that she did nothing wrong on her end but that I need to bleach my hair twice and dye it purple again... I'm speechless at this point and know that bleach is the only thing that will get this green out of my hair so my dumb ass agrees. She bleaches it twice (not using premium but basic). She doesnt even wash it out in between she just puts the bleach on top of the first session. She doesnt do my roots which are purple right now becsuse I told her not to touch my roots like last time.
She washes the bleach out... and now my hair looks like a disaster. The bleaching job this time is awfully patchy and when I got home there are random spots of orange on the top of my head where the purple roots were. My bottom hair is piss yellow and mint green. At this point I paid and left without doing the entire thing purple again. I asked her if I could do brown or any other natural color and she tells me no and says that doing my entire head violet purple is the ONLY color that will get my green out(as if she didnt learn the from the first time that it doesnt work).
At this point I'm done and I don't want her to touch my hair anymore. So I pay for the shxtty bleaching job and leave. As soon as I get home I tone my entire hair with purple shampoo and it instantly went from minty piss yellow green to a gorgeous ashy khaki. I'm really frustrated because I could've done just done this at home without this woman's useless advice.
I find these orange dots sprinkled on the back and top of my head though?? So I called later on the day and asked for a refund for the patchy orange spots that she effed up and accidentally smudged bleach on my purple roots in the back. And this woman has the audacity to laugh and say "yes, I did but you saw it in the salon chair and pointed it out to me and I told you that you need to dye it purple. You're telling me that I can't do my job correctly and I don't know how to bleach hair? But you left before then and I can't give you a refund for the bleaching job." Clearly she doesn't know how to bleach hair looking at the top of my head ?
At this point my patience has been redacted. So I hang up. As I'm writing my one star review of this salon she calls be back an hour later and tells me that instead of a refund she is willing to do my roots... PURPLE. Not brown. Not black. Not blonde. But PURPLE. I'm so sick of this entire purple thing she wants me to do. Please enough with the DAMN PURPLE agenda. I hang up on her and tell her I'll call her later. Really I just needed to cool off.
Anyways I don't want her to touch my hair anymore so I'm planning to call back in the morning and tell her that I'm not interested in doing purple roots and that all I want is a refund. I'm actually so upset that I'm on the verge of tears as I write this because I start going to my new school next week and before then I have to meet a bunch if important family members and attend a bunch if business meetings. Showing up with my hair looking like a rainbow mess is making me dread this week. My hair is so damaged and poofy it literally looks like a lions mane TT if anyone could give me so help I would really appreciate it because at this is honestly killing me. (I'm dramatic and depressed)

Sorry you had to go through all that. Unnatural hair is a relatively recent thing that salons have been offering, and the brands who do it haven't really developed the same level of training as they have for their natural colour lines, so there's a fair amount of misinformation out there. It's quite common for purple dyes to go green when bleach touches them, and some of them also go green through fading from shampoo, though some go pink instead. Generally, if you have previously had purple in your hair, more bleach is not an ideal solution for getting it out.
Anyhow, in terms of next steps, if you don't mind going darker, a natural brown or black should be able to even out the patches. Since you've gotten a lot of treatments with permanent dye (ones you have to mix with developer), I'd probably suggest going the semi-permanent direct dye route to limit the amount of damage. Since the orange is mostly around your roots, you could probably do a shadow root blending into a brown shade. I like Adore, as they have a large range of semi-permanent natural shades, but if you live near a Sally's in the US, they carry semi-permanent lines from Clairol and Ion which also work decently. When using them, I'd suggest leaving them on clean, dry hair with no conditioner in it for a few hours. There's no damage since they don't use peroxide, and it'll help the dye molecules absorb better than the typical 30 minutes that is usually recommended. You might need a second round to even things out, but do a strand test first to be sure you'll be fine with the colour.

I know this is overdue but thank you so much!! I got a dark brown color like you said and did a reverse balayage and shadow root blending. My root problem was solved and my hair looked so much better! After that I took a smidge of semi permanent cherry red dye, mixed it with a ton of treatment conditioner and purple shampoo. Now the ends of my hair became a gorgeous dusty pinky brown TT thank you so much!
