It's bee, for almost 18 months that I've started going towards blonde. I was a redhead as a child and am now a dark blonde/auburn level 6 with some white hair, mainly on the temples (15% but far more on the temples). I have lots of hair on the top, and much less behind the head, hair is coarse and prone to being dry. I started out going to hairdresser, but lost patience and tried open-air balayage which made me more orange than blonde, so I switched to foils, which were better. Went back to hairdresser wth higher budget last November but was deceived by result, so went back to diy foiling. While there is more blonde and less orange than one year ago, I still find my hair looks too orange. I'm not looking for an ashy blonde because it wouldn't match my natural base, but a nice neutral a bit golden blonde. I have the impression that trying to leave dimension, by leaving natural hair, mixed with lighter sections make the hair look orange, as well as the fact that even when lightened, my hair fades back to brass despite using blue & purple shampoos (which sometime makes it a bit grey which is not pretty either). I was thinking of two approaches :
-
doing heavier highlighting, not trying to leave dimension?
-
trying wet balayage next time I do a shadow root to blend my grays : but as I kept some natural strands in lengths & ends, I am afraid the wet balayage would lighten the blonde but also the natural strands to ginger, hence not sure it is a solution.
-
going full head blonde with foils allover (platinum card technique) and doing a root smudge afterwards. but I find this solution rather scary, but I find the maintenance easier (a simple root touch up instead of having to foil etc...- one of my daughters has this and it is rather simple to maintain, or even at hairdressers, root touch ups are cheaper than foils especially if you have lots of hair).
any advice welcome.

The hair is too dark for blue and purple shampoos to be any use. Suggest just keep doing as described in post taking a month in-between lightening the hair. From the roots can tell the natural color and compared to the ends, I think you ar3e doing good job. Just a matter of time and patience. This is my humble opinion and suggestion.

thank you so much for your answer!
I need to work on brightening the back of my head, to lighten up some orangey pieces. Will do that in a few weeks. (I did a touch-up with 20 foils but very tiny pieces 2 weeks ago after having tried open air highlights with 30 volume which got me to bright yellow-orange like the street-light - foils are the only way to lighten my hair).
