I WAS a warm level 2-3. Trying to lift to 9 at minimumPosted 1 year, 3 months ago
I'm 38, mother of 2 teen daughters, a teen son...and a 1 year old baby boy! Needless to say my life is crazy and within the last 2 months I went from a few greys to 50% or close to it. The dark color of my natural hair is a big contrast to the greys. And now, silvery/white/purplish/dusty tones are appealing me. So last Tuesday night, I decided i want to start the transition without having a regrowth line straight from the no-no book. I researched bleach baths to remove semi/semi permanent color. I had all necessary products due to all us females in the home. I used prism lite blue, 20 volume peroxide, and dove intensive care shampoo. All equal amounts. I let it sit in my hair for approximately 30 to 45 mins. I washed it out and immediately put dove intensive care conditioner in, and took a hot bath while it sat in my hair for about 2 hours. Rinsed...towel dried...and I nearly cried! I thought to myself....omg what have I done??? My hair was Wendy red, like the old fashioned hamburger girl RED! But I noticed my hair was smoother, softer, almost like it was lighter in weight too! Bouncy! I had absolutely NO breakage or clumps. Next morning my daughter says she loves it. Several people said I look like the little mermaid. I've always loved deep red, burgundy purplish hair tones on my hair...for 20 years! My husband liked it as well. So I was a bit relieved. But I want to transition. So 2 days later I decided I would do a bleach process with the aforementioned prism lites blue. With volume 20/30 mix. Left in for 30 mins. Maybe I should have left in longer because this time it was orange with tangerine roots. It was bright!! Still very soft strong and shiny...but the color was a no no! Deep conditioned as i always do. So I researched toners and I thought I might not be light enough for all that yet. So I decided to get a tub of Wella color charm powder lightener friday. Along with a 20 and 40 volume of wella developers. and T11 and T14 toner. And 050 violet additive toner. I put a saturated amount of the finest coconut oil in my hair 8hrs prior to bleaching with the wella brand. I mixed wella lightener and equal amounts of 20 and 40 to make it 30. With the ratio of 1 part powder : 2 parts developer It went on so smooooooooothly. But it took a while to put an adequate amount all over trying to avoid roots till the very end. AND I had to mix more to apply to the last 20 percent of my upper most part of head. I think I was tired, and didnt reat the clock correctly in hind sight. But I thought I was going to fry my hair, so I may have prematurely again rinsed toooo early. But I started application at 1136 PM. Finished application totally at 145am.... rinsed at 215am. And the change in lightness was very minimal! But the feel of my hair.....perfect. the texture has not changed in the slightest! Still smooth, silky, and shiny. The next morning...I felt that maybe my eyes are deceiving me into making me think it isnt light enough still...so I decided what the heck...let's tone it. Because even if it goes darker...hopefully it will tackle the orange. I mixed the 2 bottles of toner T11/T14 with the suggested 20 volume developer and added 3 capful of the 050. And hoped for the best. My roots went from a pale yellow to a beautifully soft angel like color. But my orange length only softened its sharpness.
What can I do? Will I ever be able to lift the orange enough to apply the silvery ashey tone.....or is that a pipe dream. My daughter has a tube of colorista soft pink in the drawer...I'm tempted to mix with my deep conditioner and let it sit for 30 to 40 mins in my hair starting at the every so brightly contrasting roots and pull it through to the lengths...just so it will get my hot roots less hot...lol. I'm even considering doing another bleach but with 40 of course paying special care NOT to apply to my roots ...just the orange legnth and watch very very very closely.
I'm open to all ideas! Even pastel purple! As I feel it would possibly blend better with the darker regrowth of 50% grey. I just do not want to go back down to the lower levels of boring drab hair color. ...atleast not yet. Pictures show process from little mermaid up to after the toning. What level am I at now???

yourte light need the roots (level 9 I would say) but more level 7 on lengths. red looks very good on you.you could try lifting the ends more, but using foils and maybe a bond protector but not over 20 volume, with lots of product (low and slow method), it depends what is your target shade. An alternative (which I am considering for myself - I'm 49 with an auburn base and level 9 yellow-orange home-madehighlights) is to get a short haircut and go platinum blonde. a pretty face can usually pull it off pretty well!

So a few hours ago, it was suggested to me to do a strand test. I did... with bleach and 40vol. I took a peice of that strand and rinsed with cold water at 30 mins. Nothing changed. I then allowed to sit with it another 15. So total test was actually at like 50 minutes. The lift was sooooo very slight. I wouldnt even say it was a half level lift. I was reading that a clear developer will be more effective.

indeed you could also try clear with 20 volume; did you at some point use a color reducer or color remover? have you tried Blondme bleach? it is very potent, but it can fry your hair with 40 volume.

I did use a color remover. But clearly it didnt improve. I did another bleach with wella lightener and a clear developer. It did lighten. But not much at all. Afterwards I applied toner....and I believe my hair is just not going to hold any color unless I do a protein treatment. So, I have the aphogee 2 step protein treatment with aphogee balancing moisturizer on it's way. Going to do that...THEN color with a demi gloss with neutral and ash tones. As well as a clear demo. Because I am too scared to attempt anymore lifting for a while. My hair took a beating! So mainly I'm looking to add some shine.
And if all else fails... I ordered arctic fox virgin pink and violet dream since it was by one get one half off. I figured after the demi process...if it's still orangey....maybe attempt to pink it up like a rose gold effect.
