Blue dye over pink hair?by whoskim12Posted 2 years, 1 month ago
Hi! I’ve had pink hair for a while now, but I really want to switch over to dark blue. What would happen if I put dark blue dye over my hair at the state it’s in? I’m scared that if I fade the color it’ll leave a lot of orange undertones, which will the turn the blue into green. If I put blue over it now, would it turn purple? Or would the color turn out muddy? All answers are appreciated!

Your pink is still pretty strong, so it'll probably end up purple. It looks relatively cool-toned so I think it will probably fade out to a reasonably nice base for the blue. I'd just be careful bleaching though, since I've found some pink dyes leave a stubborn orange when bleached.

1. Ion color remover -doesn't require developer so its not damaging, the repeat shampooing will dry your hair tho so be sure to deep condition when all is said and done. You can do this as many times as you feel you can, or need to, just condition when you're done.
How well color recover works also depends on the type of dye, a semi perm and a perm. direct dye attach to the hair differently, so depending on the type of pink it is, research the best type of color remover.
----I've also heard that * loreal effasol * is really good at removing perm. colors, but it does use a low vol developer, but that's still less damage than bleach.
- Pravana vivids blue!!! I have actually done it over faded arctic fox pink, I swear that dye covers everything. Get 2-3 tubes and apply it to shampooed but not conditioned hair, wrap it and sleep in it overnight, rinse in cold water in the morning. It will be hella dark at first but it fades really well and will give you that dark blue.
Also orange doesn't turn blue green, yellow does. Trust me it will cover orange, but you want as little pink as possible, or at least light pink.
Word of warning though, pravana is known for its longevity so if you're not ready to commit to blue for a while, maybe manic panic or other semi perm would be better, but then you'd definitely need to remove as much pink as possible, as they are less forgiving when it comes to covering other colors.

Red and blue make purple. The pink/red is strong so my guess is blue-purple. If you have the dark blue dye, then suggest test the dark blue dye on a very small section of hair which is called a strand test. Strand tests help determine the time to leave the dye or product on the hair and what the results would be for that length of time. I found strand tests to be helpful.
Once when wish had done a strand test, I used ION Sky Blue and a lot of conditioner to create a very light blue to light blue mixture. I diluted ION Blue a lot so I could end with light blue hair. I placed the light blue mixture all over my short hair thoroughly. Curious and checking the progress of the light blue mixture after 5 minutes I rinsed out the mixture from my bangs. Looked into the mirror and was shocked! My hair was a medium deep blue. I immediately rinsed out all the mixture and looked into the mirror again. Shocked! Almost all my hair was a medium blue with about 10 percent of my hair strands of dark blue mixed within the medium blue. This is one reason will never use ION again. Also one reason I always strongly suggest a strand test.
Best of luck. These are my suggestions and opinion.

First off best of luck, but I'm thinking a purple/dark blue, not muddy. I saw some styles on https://www.aznasalon.com where a person had a before and after pic on their insta with the same color before and after.

Katies direct dye fading treatment is pretty great. A couple rounds of that and you might be at a pale enough pink that it will be ok. I went from pink to blue. I washed my hair w stripping shampoo for weeks, then hit it 3x w Katies direct dye fading treatment, and then bleached it once. That was all spread out of course, and took a long while, but the transition was perfect. Much like everyone else I think the pink is still strong in this one, and unless you lighten further you may end up w a purple ish.
