HELP! bleach then toner = yellow and grey hair mess :(Posted 1 year, 6 months ago
Hiya all, I need some help please! I recently posted about eradicating my dark roots in my grey hair, and I got some really good advice, but I seem to have gone wrong somewhere and now have an awful mess :(
I bleach my roots with 30 vol (I drenched my hair in coconut oil first!) and they came up to a pale yellow, slightly gold colour. Hair is ever so slightly dry, but the coconut oil did its thing and protected it.
So I plopped a Wella T18 toner through to mask the yellow, and disaster.
I now have pale yellow roots with white spots, and grey lengths. I really could cry!
Please could someone help me on how to achieve an all over grey? I don't mind bleach bathing again, I'd just rather avoid an straight bleach as I think my hair will fry. Thanks in advance!

Ideally you'd lighten up the roots about 1 shade. Do that with bleach and 20 volume developer. A bleach bath isn't accurate enough to do only the roots without it running into the ends which are already light enough. It's actually quite good that you have that difference in colour because it highlights which areas are too dark.
You could dye over what you have with a darker grey but as it fades the roots will start showing through again. I'd avoid T18 for future touch-ups because it's a bit damaging. I've experimented with quite a few greys lately and for you I would recommend Crazy Color Graphite, Adore Platinum or Titanium and either Pravana Smokey Silver or Sparks Silver Mist. None of those dyes will damage your hair (most are conditioning) and you can re-dye as often as you need to.
By the way, the lilac colour you have on the ends will wash out within a week or two.

Thank you so much for your reply :) I've bought some Loreal Preference 11.21 dye as I thought it would be gentler than a re-bleach? I shall buy one of the Greys you suggested to do this weekend, thank you!!
