Roots or whole head?Posted 2 years, 2 months ago
I’m new here I’ve only posted once. After scrawling through Google last few days and not getting a straight answer I decided to come and ask on here. Over 3 months ago I box dyed my hair with L’Oréal extreme platinum. I only bought one box so didn’t have enough dye, the bits that got coated looked gorgeous, I toned it and it went mostly white. I haven’t touched up my roots or dyed my hair since. I planned on buying 2 boxes of the same L’Oréal extreme platinum, waiting over 3 months then dying my whole head again to get the same lovely colour all over. But, after reading google if you bleach your whole head instead of just roots you’ll have no hair left. But, on the packet instructions it says if your hair hasn’t been processed for 3 months or over you can dye your whole head not just touch the roots up. I plan to get my whole head to my desired level, then touch up the roots once a month. Can I dye my whole head now that I’ve not bleached, dyed or processed my hair in anyway in over 3 months? My roots are huge surely i May aswell just re don’t whole head?? Or do I have to stick to roots only. Help please I’m new to all this hair dye. Oh and I’m naturally blonde anyway only bleached it once in my whole life and that was over 3 months ago xx

Pictures would help and knowing what the end goal for hair color would also help.
Box dyes are unreliable and for me been disastrous.
If the three months of roots are darker then the ends, then suggest bleach the three months of roots to match the ends as close as possible. And this is if you are trying to get the lighter blonde shade overall.
If your roots are darker then the ends and attempt to apply the same shade all over, you will likely not end up with the same color from the roots to the ends. The hair color you have before dying is a strong factor in the outcome of any hair dyeing process. Example if apply a light blue semi-permanent dye to yellow hair you will not end with light blue hair. The result will be a light aqua or light yellowish green hair.
This is my opinion and suggestions.
My hair is naturaly light blonde anyway, I just wanted it white. My roots are naturally slightly darker than the lengths of my hair. Since I last bleached my hair with box dye the sun has lightened my roots naturally anyway so my roots aren’t very much darker than the lengths of my hair in fact you can barely see my roots unless I put my hair up in a pony tail. I’ve slathered my hair in coconut oil at the moment ready to box dye my hair with L’Oreal extreme platinum in an hour or so so pictures won’t show the true colour. I’ll see if I can find a recent picture. When I dyed it over 3 mo the ago I only had one box and didn’t have enough dye to do all my hair so it was lovely and white where it was covered well but when I ran out of dye those bits were darker, that’s why I’ve waited so long so I could buy 2 packets of the extreme platinum and get a nice even coverage. The instructions in the box dye say to dye the whole head of you’ve not processed your hair for over 3 months. I dyed it in January so it’s actually more like 5 mo the since I last bleached my hair. I’m going to take the plunge and dye the lot my Aunty regularly bleached her whole head instead of just doing roots and her heart is straw like her it’s never fallen out lol. I just want it evenly platinum so I can start experimenting with the lovely pink pastel colours I’ve bought xx I’ll see if I can find a recent picture to post so you can see my hair colour as it is at the pmoment.

so don't bleach the white parts again, coconut oil and any of the legnths you missed last time first, dont get it on the already bleached bits, then put it on the roots
Well, I didn’t wait. I coated my hair in so much coconut oil I was like an oil slick the night before, sat all day with it on deciding wether to take the plunge and bleach my whole head. I used 2 L’Oreal extreme platinum box dye’s, decided to go for it, bleached my whole head, bleached the shit out of my hair, washed it out. Luckily I still have hair-it hadn’t all snapped off. It was very very pale yellow, like inside of banana, I then toned it with 20% developer and Wella T18, only left that on for 4/5 minutes as my hair sucks up the lilac and it ends up overtones. Rinsed off the toner, I now have platinum white hair, with light lilac tinges to the front from the toner. But, and it’s a big but, my hair was in awful condition. I’ve spent the last 2 nights with Argen oil hair mask on all night, I invested in some Tigi Dumb Blonde shampoo and conditioner for ‘chemically abused hair’ lol. And 3 days on my hair is soft, shiny, white and actually looks healthy. I’m due a trim anyway but I’m finally platinum blonde!! I’m only ever doing roots from now on though, I was lucky my hair didn’t snap off. Pictures to follow when I figure out how to post them xx
I need a few days of using purple shampoo to remove pale yellow tinge but I’m happy with the shade of my hair. Turned out ok luckily xx

The does look nice, but just be careful with any future treatments from now on, since your hair probably can't handle another process. Hair doesn't really heal over time, but there are plenty of products that can make it look and feel better. However, you can't use those products if you don't have any hair left.
The yellow patches might be a bit too dark to tone by just washing with silver shampoo, so you could try leaving the shampoo on your clean, dry hair for a couple of hours. It's basically like using a semi-permanent toner. It won't do any damage, but will give the pigment a little more time to absorb.
