How to keep brown dye on bleached hair from fading?by DharmaPosted 2 years, 6 months ago
So, I’ve been bleaching my hair for years now and I want to go back to brown in order to let my hair grow out naturally. Anyay, I’ve used a burgundy permanent dye and while it looked great at first it started to fade after about a week... I then used Manic Panic Vampire Red over it and now have a really unsightly reddish something color. I’d use another demi permanent color but my roots are much more healthy so I never get an even color. Now, I know putting on another permanent color will damage my hair further (it’s been bleached two times before) but I’m desperate to get to a nice brown that looks natural and doesn’t wash out.
So, is there any way that I can prevent the dye to fade? Is this even something that occurs regularly? I’ve googled it and came up with nothing so I’m beginning to think that I’m the only person with this problem.
Any help is highly appreciated!

Any dye, including permanent dye will fade—it’s just the way of the world. You can use some techniques like washing in cold water, using sulfate and salt free shampoos and avoiding heat styling as much as possible.
I would recommend semi permanent over permanent dyes because they are way more conditioning and less damaging because there’s no peroxide, plus you can leave it on way longer for a deeper stain (1hr+ as opposed to a permanent dye) but that’s just me. You can never undamage your hair!

I agree a semi-permanent dye would be be better for your hair, if you need to keep re-dying it all the time then you might as well use a semi dye that's better for your hairs condition. Damaged hair does'nt hold dye well, maybe olaplex treatments would help, but try and stay patient and grow all that damaged hair out.

Agree from decades of non-professional experience even permanent hair colors fade. One case on me was applied a dark brown permanent color on golden blonde hair the result was black hair with mane red streaks. I was so glad this faded.
Products that contain ammonia or peroxide are not good for the hair. Semi-permanent dyes tend not to have peroxide or ammonia and are better for the hair in my humble opinion.
