Need Help/Advice for Complex Hair Historyby KayflowerPosted 2 years, 6 months ago
Hi guys- brand new to this! I need some advice as to what to do with my current hair situation. Here’s just some background and then I’ll explain what I’m looking for.
I am naturally blonde and about 2 years ago I decided to bleach my hair to make it lighter and brighter. At that time I didn’t take very good care of it and used a lot of heat on it and the ends became very damaged.
I ended up cutting off a few inches and dying it to a brown as I was sick of keeping up with the bleach and it was obviously damaging my hair.
I then went through a bit of a rough time personally and to “treat” myself I went to go get extensions s put in via a microbead weave. The extensions did not last long as the hair put in kept matting and the person I did it through in hindsight was pretty incompetent. It ended up coming out...along with a lot of my natural hair.
I ended up buying clip in extensions and cutting my hair even shorter to get rid of more damage and to try and even out the loss from the removal of the extensions. It’s almost been a whole year since the big chop.
Since then I wear the clip in extensions from Luxy on a daily basis. I am still uncomfortable with the length my hair is at plus it is really uneven (almost like a mullet). I have to keep dying my hair/roots brown when the blonde comes through which doesn’t help with remaining damage. My hair has become very pouring because of the damage so achieving the colour I amtually want is hard (it always goes way darker)
My hair is in a much better place then it was a year ago as I try to reduce heat styling and do frequent coconut oil treatments but continuing to dye it is driving me nuts and I cannot wait for about another 6 months when I feel it will be okay to stop wearing my extensions.
In the meantime I am wondering if I can try to grow out my blonde hair again and to slowly start to lighten it by putting highlights in? Only problem is I would have to highlight my extensions too. This is obviously something I don’t want to do at home and I am unsure if a stylist will do this with clip ins or if it is possible due to some damage and pourosity differences in the hair. I’ve also been super embarrassed to go to a salon and explain all of this!!!!
I just want my healthy blonde hair back and these extensions gone. I feel like a fake always wearing them. I realize I need to be patient (I have been!) but I think the highlights will help me transition out of the extensions easier.

Thoughts: Why don't you phone a few hairdressers in your area and ask if they will do both your hair and extensions?. I'm sure that lots of hairdressers have been asked to do it, most people would want their extensions to match their real hair. Even with the difference in texture and condition a good hairdresser should be able to get a similar result with both.

Great advice from blu. I think most hairdressers would be happy to help you achieve your goals. I would check out a few local salons on facebook, instagram etc. and see if you like the quality of their work. Check to see whether they're doing modern colouring techniques - I find that's a good indicator of how much they care about their work. Look for a few reviews. Explain that you want some highlights done and that you wear extensions all the time and need them updated to match. It shouldn't be much more work for them than doing a full head of natural hair.
