Semi Permanent hair dye - not taking (setting) on my hair!!!

    Hi,

So my hair has been through the wars over the past few months... to say the least, i've dyed it a lot! However, I have had many treatments and haircuts and its not in bad condition at all.

My hair is now blue, yes blue and I love it - however, my bosses at work do not... so I have tried to make it more subtle but going a navy blue (well I am trying to anyway).

I have been to the hairdressers three times, and spend well over £300!!!!! I always do my own hair, I even cut it myself and it turns out good - but because I wanted to go blue I thought I would trust the hairdressers (boy, was I wrong)! My hairdresser never managed to get the blue to the colour I wanted and the most recent time I went which was 2 weeks ago - she put a highlight tint on my roots (which went white blonde) - then she put the blue dye on. However, my roots went green and my hair was blue!

Since then, I have bought the 'Adora - royal navy' semi-perm hair dye... I have used it twice and it hasn't taken to my hair!!! I do not know why, please can someone advise me what I can do, please???

I have been applying the dye onto dry hair, maybe if it is damp first before applying it? I have one bottle of dye left and I really want to do it correctly!

Does anyone have any good suggestions, please?? :)

Okay, I had to do a bit of reading, as I've not used Adore before. From what I can see, though, they're equivalent to Special Effects, which has been my go-to for ages, but finding them in stock is a freaking miracle.

I don't know the process that you use for hair dyeing, but Adore (like many semi-permanents, although there are a couple exceptions) is different from commercial dyes in that it is a vegetable-based hair stain. It looks like Adore has some other additives that are good for your hair.

What most people do wrong with dyes that are actually hair stains is rinse them out too soon. I've talked with a lot of people who assumed that, like dyes with developers, you had to rinse out after 30-45 minutes. That's not long enough for a stain to fully "take"; at best, you'll get the color, but it'll rinse out in a few weeks.

Especially if you're trying to get a very dark color, the longer, the better. When I'm going deep purple (basically, the equivalent of your blue), I leave it on for a minimum of 3hrs, and sometimes longer. I find it results in a deeper, longer-lasting color.

However, if you've already done this, then I'm afraid my next thought is that your hair and Adore don't get along well (or, at least not that shade). That happens sometimes. My hair does not take Manic Panic for crap. If you need an alternative option, Special Effects is my first suggestion, although their darkest blue is out of stock. After that, Pravana. I've heard good things about Directions, but I haven't used them personally.

As for dry vs damp hair, I've honestly done it both ways and never noticed a difference.

Adore really needs heat to stick to your hair. waving the blowdryer over it a few times can help it sink in a bit more. Applying it to dry hair is preferable as wet hair will dilute the dye. Wear a shower cap to keep heat in and stop it drying. And definitly keep the dye it in your hair for a few hours at least.

    Hi Elial,

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comment! It have found it so helpful, so thank you grinning

In terms of how long I am leaving the dye on my hair, I have been leaving it on between 45mins-1hr! Clearly that was my big mistake!

Thank you for telling me to leave it on longer, I really appreciate this!! I will try again tonight and leave it on for about three hours!

The adore dye is amazing btw, even though it hasn't completely set on my hair, I have still noticed a difference to the shine and quality of my hair!

    Again thanks a lot laughingheart
