Is this possible (dark to blonde)?by armydreamersPosted 3 years, 4 months ago
Would I be crazy to try to go from this dark shade to blonde? My hair is naturally dark dirty (ugly) blonde. It has layers of dark brown and red on it right now. It's starting to fade so I have to decide whether to get my normal dark color or go blonde instead for a change!
Would it take forever and be too damaging to even try this? Would I even look good blonde? Thanks!!

It's not necessarily impossible, but I'd say there's no guarantees, so you'll want to have a back-up plan that does the least amount of damage to your hair. If you're going from a dark permanent dye to blonde, you'll want to start with a colour remover like Color Oops or Colorfix. It doesn't do the same type of permanent damage as bleach. Please check out the colour remover section for more details of how it works, but you may need a couple of rounds and be sure to rinse EXTREMELY thoroughly (1-2 hours) after each round. Afterwards, you can assess what colour you're left with and strand test a 20 vol bleach over it (after you've extremely thoroughly rinsed out the colour remover) to see if you can get to your desired level (around a level 8-9). If you have success there, you can probably tone it with a demi-permanent and semi-permanent blonde shade to your goal. Please do not skip the strand test step, because it is extremely important to determine whether your end goal will even be possible. If you just toss bleach over everything and end up with a lot of unevenness, you'll be no closer to blonde and will have to deal with fixing it.
Ideally, after the colour remover be a somewhat orange-ish base. Unfortunately, it may be possible that you have an extremely stubborn red tone left over from the permanent dye. If that is the case, I think blonde is much less possible, but you can still try the strand test with the bleach.

Thanks for the advice! I'm not sure if it's even worth trying. Eek!!
