Question about Olaplex and Coconut Oilby riverswillowPosted 5 years ago
Hello all! New to the forum but I've been lurking for ages. I'm a hair dyeing enthusiast (I think that's a good term for a talented amateur who is no way a professional) and have always bleached my hair by first soaking it in coconut oil overnight and then bleaching over it the next day and I swear by this to everyone who asks me for hair dye advice, and most don't listen to me because laziness but those who -do- listen always say how thankful they are because it super helped. The times I've fried my hair was when I only left it on for like, 4 hours instead of 8.
But anyway I've now gotten my hand on some Olaplex sounds of angels singing and I'm super excited to use it but I don't know what to do in regards to the coconut oil thing. My scalp has never hurt because of the coconut oil when bleaching- it's just been pretty itchy a few times- and I'm therefor super scared of -not- using coconut oil before bleaching. But I'm worried that the coconut oil would block the Olaplex from being able to get into the hair shaft and do it's thing, though to be fair that is the same worry I had with bleach being able to lighten hair at all past coconut oil and that ended up not being the case.
So my question is basically, can Olaplex still help if my hair was soaked in coconut oil before I applied the bleach + Olaplex, or will the coconut oil block it?
And if the coconut oil DOES block it, what am I supposed to do to not hurt my head? Just, be careful? I guess the answer is probably use on the scalp bleach with 20 developer, but I've never before had to worry about using off the scalp bleach on my head (I actually just learned there was a difference in the last few days whooooooops), but I maybe dumbly don't want to do that because of however much longer it would take to lift my hair/I'd have to go out and buy some.
Is the answer I should wait a few days for my hair to become naturally dirty to then bleach with Olaplex because that's normal advice for bleaching hair? And if the answer is yes to that, that probably means coconut oil would work, since that's what the coconut oil is doing basically, coating your scalp and hair in oils to protect it a bit from the bleach.
I've asked this question on a few Reddit threads but no one really knew what I was asking doh. I'm expecting it's a hard question to find an answer to, since it's combining a DYI technique (coconut oil) with a very professional tool (Olaplex) and so the people familiar with the DYI things won't really know about Olaplex and those who -do- know about Olaplex probably will just tell me that as I'm not a license cosmetologist I shouldn't be attempting any of this. (Alas, I am a broke college student so I don't have the option of paying for a professional to do this which is why I've taught myself.)
Also, does anyone know if there's a fb group dedicated to hair-ing? I've found a few subreddits and of course this forum but I'm on facebook most of the time so would prefer it.
Thank you all so much!
P.s. This is round two of me trying to post this because my internet is being shifty, if somehow I'm double posting I'm sorry D:

I think it's probably fine to use both since it's pretty similar to just bleaching over dirty hair, but, to be "safe," I'd just put the coconut close to my scalp and try not to run it down into your hair. This is kind of hard to do with short hair, but I don't think it's impossible if you concentrate on massaging it in

I mean the worst that happens with using both is the Olaplex is wasted, which is pretty depressing to think of mind you but it's not catastrophic. Anyway I did both but used less coconut oil then I normally would crosses fingers
