medium/dark grey dye that won't turn green?by rianniePosted 2 years, 10 months ago
Hi! Last year, my hair was bleached and (a few months later) dyed a dark silver/grey. Since then, it's faded to a neutral? warm? medium brown. I'm planning to use (but first strand test) Color Oops since when my hair was bleached originally, it was lighter, around a level 7 or 8. I've been searching around for a dye to take me back to silver- Pravana silver seems like it's not very pigmented and will only work to transform the lightest of hair to silver, which isn't really what I want. Ion titanium leans blue/green and I'd rather use one that leans purple. Nirvel artx is too dark for my tastes, and supposedly Joico titanium doesn't last very long. Please help me find a suitable dye or let me know if my impressions of the above dyes are wrong. Thanks! For reference, my goal color is attached :) The lighter, the better, but I like the darker grey/silver too!

I have heard if not in the United States some colleagues outside the US found Pravana Silver is not very pigmented. I live within the US and every time Pravana Silver was used right out of the tube on white hair the result was a dark gray like the second picture. I like a silver to gray shade and always dilute the Pravana Silver heavily to get that result.
Same observation that ION Titanium leans toward blue. ION Shark Blue leans more toward a dark blue than even ION Titanium. ION needs to be heavily diluted just to achieve a silver to light gray shade on white hair.
Never used or could get Nrivel artx.
Sparks Titanium is one of the best dyes used to get a silver to light gray. This dye is very pigmented. The results last a long time. Much easier to work with than the ION.
Joico Titanium experienced much different results. Early December 2016 a friend used Joico Titanium on myself with white hair as the base hair color. Our goal was silver hair starting with white hair. She thought Titanium right out of the tube would achieve a silver, I knew differently and urged her to dilute the Joico Titanium. The Joico Titanium was not diluted and placed on white hair. The result after 35 minutes was black hair with a tint of purple more noticeable purple tint on the hair ends/tips. Very little faded after three weeks even using methods to deliberately remove/fade the color. In my opinion based on this experience Joico Titanium for myself lasts a long time.
I would suggest avoiding ION Titanium since this silver leans toward blue.
These are my suggestions.

Thanks! It does seem that Pravana silver is more suitable than I thought. How did it fade? Also, I just strand tested the Color Oops and my hair appears to be a level 7 (I'll try it again to see if it'll go lighter), since that's not the same starting base as your white hair, how much will the results differ? With that in mind, would you still suggest the same dyes? I've also seen Wella 050 Cooling Violet mentioned in some youtube videos; have you had any experience with that?
