Is this light enough for pastel colours? And help with white roots - again!
by CrazyCatLadyPosted 4 years agoHello everyone!
So, I wanted to make this a reply to my previous post (https://www.haircrazy.com/forum/general-questions/22252/), but I couldn't figure out how to add pictures to the replies. Can anyone tell me how to do it?
Anyhoo, Thank you so much Dizzinea! I'm so sorry for being late in thanking you (holidays and life happened)!
I did go through with the bleach + Olaplex. I was amazed at how little damage I got and how much it lifted the permanent dye! The parts that had already gone through two balayages and two bleach baths got some split ends and they were feeling all rough and dry, but other than this, my hair actually felt better than before! I've been using the Olaplex no 3 + one stand alone treatment and tons of Kerastase Masquintense and Fusio Dose and now the ends are nearly normal looking/feeling and the rest of the hair is just smooth and shiny.
I died my hair Ultra Violet the same day I bleached, which faded into a beautiful lavender with white ends, but then some brownish yellows started peeking through and I just slapped some Cleo Rose on top of it. It was a little too loud for me, but now it has faded and is looking gorgeous (plum-ish in the midsection and a nearly white rose on the ends).
My question now is: is my hair light enough to dye it pastel (after I wash out the pink)? I'd love to try mint and turquoise. I feel that because my face is so narrow, darker, more intense colours "drown" me under their awesomeness. I'll add pics so you guys can help.
Also, I'm really not happy with how direct dyes cover white hair. Even the sections I bleach bathed can't hold colour for long. Before the first wash the white roots near the temples will start showing (I think this might be related to natural grease from the scalp or maybe sweating - it is summer in Australia!). Is there any other dye I can use to cover the whites that won't be as damaging to bleach out in the future?
Thank you and sorry for the long post!

Getting home from the hairdresser (the curls on my right are my daughter's. She also bleached and is now very purple)

Ultra Violet. It is too intense for me I think. I'm hungover as hell in this pic, but I don't think it'd be flattering even if I wasn't

hmm I think ultra violet is gorgeous on you. I think that it's going to depend on how light you can fade the pink, you want it to be very gradual to not cause further damage, also keep in mind green can really stain so if you go the mint route it's probably not going to get all the way out and green stains are best covered by blue or purple

Thanks!
Do you know why green stains? Mixing blue and yellow dyes instead of applying a green dye probably won't get around that, right?
Also, do you know if hair dyes are LIFO, FIFO are neither? As in: I died it violet, then pink; which pigments will wash off first?

It's just that those pigments get more easily stuck in your hair because they are small or just can really penetrate the cuticle. There are some blues that wash out fairly easily, but I find yellows really do stick around, so it might work for you. Yellow is generally pretty easy to dye over, though it can be a real killer on pastels.
Overall, the order you dye your hair doesn't really affect fading as much as just the chemical make-up of pigments in it. Violets (and most dyes) are generally made up of a lot of different pigments and some will fade faster than others, so you can end up with a blue-ish or a pink-ish fade depending on the dye. If you have a left-over staining, though, it's usually because those pigments are really deep in the cuticle and you'll find that it's pretty much impossible to fade those without letting everything on top fade out as well.

Bleached hair may also be too porous to hold onto color. Kind of like trying to hang a coat on a wall without the hook. Thus hair that is too porous or open will hold onto color for only a short time.
For ideal pastels the base hair color should be either white or the inside of a banana peel. The blonde picture in my opinion is a light gold blonde to gold blonde and a little too dark for pastels.
The violet looks terrific on the ends in my opinion. Ultra violet by manic panic is a blue based purple. However, since also dyed over with Cleo Rose likely the hair will fade pink. Red and pink take a long time to completely fade from hair. Suggest patience before reaching an ideal color for pastels.
These are my suggestions.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll be trying to fade the pink and violet over the next few weeks. Methinks I'll try a medium/light blue next. This is fun! :-) Also, I have given up on trying to cover up my roots with wow and will be putting permanent colour on it, sadly. It is amazing what a few white hairs can do to one's self esteem.
