    SILVER Hair? HELP!!!

    by Lost_Boy
Posted 5 years, 6 months ago

Hey everyone new member here and I'm just trying to find the perfect way to make my hair silver I followed this youtube tutorial below

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS912C6OzDA&t=375s

I did everything he did, except mix the frosty ash with the lilac because I wanted my just silver and not purply Except my hair came out nowhere near the silver he has. Mine came out more of an ash blonde...

So what can I do to finally achieve my silver dream. I saw Arctic fox has a sterling and privana has a silver dye but I saw many reviews say how it doesn't pick up the color, or turn your hair green. I also saw cooling violet from wella, but I don't know if mix it with the T14 or T18 wella toner, and is it a half toner, half cooling ash, 2 parts developer, or how do i do it.

If anyone can help me come up with the silver looking hair that the guy has in the video or close to it, that would be awesome

It sounds like your base wasn't light enough for the grey.

Can you post a photo of what you have now, preferably outdoors or by a window. There are instructions for adding photos under Site Stuff.

By the way, I don't really want to criticize the video too much, but for the sake of saving yourself from damage, I wouldn't use bleach if you have a permanent dye in your hair. I'd try to get as much as possible out with a colour remover first like Colour B4 or Color Oops since they don't do the same permanent damage as bleach. Also, if your hair is light enough, a semi-permanent grey can do the job of a permanent one without the damage and should be preferred since the longevity is about the same.

bleach your hair to platinum looking then add wella half t18 and half wella 050 cooling violet... with 2 parts developer

ahhh i want to do this now, but i bleach my hair a little over a week ago. how soon after my last bleach can i bleach my hair again? 4 weeks after right?

The goal of waiting is so you can have time for damage to gradually show, since it doesn't always appear straight after bleaching and you can make an informed decision. If you're willing to take the risk and don't mind potentially needing to cut off some hair, you can bleach again as soon as your scalp regains the moisture. Just don't wash your hair a few days and let it get greasy.

Also, which bleach are you using? Some brands, I find, just don't lift well past a certain point and you get too much yellow. I'd also advise against the Wella toners since they are unnecessary damage in my opinion when you could dilute a non-damaging semi-permanent dye like Manic Panic Ultra Violet or Blue Steel or Ion Titanium. Also, I'm head good things about the Ion Perfection Booster at Sally's. Apparently, it's meant to be similar to Olaplex and can help reduce damage from bleaching.

I agree with Vivienne about the Color Charm. It has quite a bit of ammonia in it which can be especially damaging to bleached hair. There are lots of really great greys on the market now, that you can apply directly to bleached hair that will actually condition your hair. To add to Vivienne's list there's Crazy Color Graphite, Adore Platinum, Adore Titanium, Nirvel ArtX (haven't used this myself but many people here have had great results with it), Pravana Silver, Sparks Starbright Silver, Sparks Silver Mist to name a few smile

Im going to wait the full 4 weeks/1 month to bleach again, my hair is pretty thick and I'm shock it was my first time bleaching it, i thought it would cause more damage but 2 weeks later still looks ok. Im a guy so don't have much hair, so if it gets damage, theirs no harm ill just get a buzz cut. So when you mean dilute those dye's you mean to put like half conditioner or water in those dyes right? And the bleached I used was manic panic 30 :) Is that a good bleach to use or should i use the 40 version to get a platinum blonde or should i use another bleach?

Ahhh theirs so many silvers out there, I don't know which one to choose. Im scared as many of these silver dyes I heard turns your hair green. And ahhh I can deal with this ash blonde I have now but no way would I tolerate having greenish hair lol. Im torn on privana silver, cooling violet and arctic fox sterling. I want a really vibrant silver, that isn't too neon but yet shows from far away. You know a true silver

Diluting dyes just means mixing them with conditioner. I'd recommend it for most silver dyes, as they tend to have really strong blue tones. As a result, if you apply them to hair that's too yellow, they may fade green. If your hair gets to platinum, this shouldn't be much of an issue, but you could also counteract it by adding just a drop of pink into the mix as well, though it will start to pull a little lavender if you do that. It's pretty tricky to recommend one dye for a true silver, since it is so dependent on your base. Even if it looks totally even, sometimes, there are small variations in colours that are hard to see when it's yellow, but really get highlighted with the grey. Running a UV light can help identify the darker regions so you can apply the bleach there first.

In general, I'd recommend something a bit dark or well-pigmented like Pravana Silver or Sparks Starbright Silver because it gives you a little more flexibility to dilute it to your preferred strength without being as hard to work with as actually diluting a black dye. I actually have seen good results from Crazy Color Graphite, but I haven't used it myself. The Nirvel ArtX grey is also quite nice, though it is fairly unique in that it's more of a warm grey (like a purple-brown base). It doesn't come out with any hints of brown on the hair, but it's just a softer colour than most silvers tend to me. Whatever you choose, I'd highly recommend strand tests so you can do a little experimenting. Also, it's not unlikely that you might end up with a strong blue tone or lavender tone at first, but just give it a few washes and it should fade down to a silver.

Of those, I think BlondMe is the best and most reliable for me. However, I would definitely not use 40 vol at this time. I'm not sure how dark your hair currently is, but if it's in the orange/yellow range, 20 vol should be plenty, maybe even 15.

I also forgot to add in wella blondor, so do you think blondeMe is better than that as well? my hair is like an ashy blonde not orange currently

    thank you for the help,

I think they are about the same for lift, but Blondor is nicer in that it doesn't expand as much when you mix in the peroxide. I'd personally just go with what's cheaper.

So this weekend will be 1 month since I last bleached my hair and I have 2 more questions so I can do it this weekend

I ordered wella T18 and cooling violet... The cooling violet says to add 2-4 capfuls however I have seen some people mix half t18 and half the bottle of cooling violet together with 2 parts developer. What do you think is better to do? I want a true silver, one that actually shows, and not no dark grey color thats hard to see.

and if the grey didnt show up with those 2 products I also bought pravana silver.... I should dilute it with conditioner and not shampoo right? just use any conditioner or do you have a specific one to recommend? and how much conditioner should i put in to dilute the pravana

I can't really answer the mixing questions for sure, since I don't really know what your hair looks like right now and silvers often require experimenting. I'd just try a small patch/strand first with the Pravana Silver and just keep it covered and let it process for around an hour and see how it looks. Are you planning on bleaching your hair again before this?

So I finally did it!!!! The grey came out a little darker than I wanted too though :( Heres what I did, I bleached my hair once with schwarzkopt blondme, then mix half of wella T18 and half wella cooling violet left it on for the max 45 minutes... I guess I should have left it on for like 15 minutes to get a lighter silver right?

and guess I should have only dropped 2-4 capfuls of cooling violet to get it more lighter silver right?

so is there anything I can do to make it lighter silver? I still have half bottle of 050 and t18, do I do it again but just add 3 capfuls this time, I also have pravana, should I dilute it as much as possible to get my dark grey hair, lighter?

I know nothing about permanent toners, but I did a quick Google search on Wella cooling violet and found this article: http://www.fashionicide.com/2015/08/diy-how-to-dye-your-hair-grey-at-home.html

If I'm reading this article correctly, I'd say you don't have much to worry about. The dark grey will fade (you can wash it a few times, that's likely to help), and then you can use Pravana Silver. Just be sure to dilute it so it won't be too dark.

There's a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn't that kind of the point?

It's not actually as dark as I thought, my apartment just had shitty lighting. Looks much better outdoors in natural light. I'm happy with it, it's not so dark and it's not too light. Pretty good for my second attempt at getting grey lol. It's much better than the blonde I had, you can't really wear anything than dark colors with blonde. Hopefully this silver fades nicely as I heard it doesn't last long

I always have that issue with indoor lighting, I try not to judge my final color till I look at it outdoors! Good luck with your newly silver hair. :)

So a little update, the cooling violet plus T18 only lasted 2 washes before fading back to blonde. Last night I put pravana and conditioner, I would say a 50/50 dilution and left it on my head for like 2 hours. I washed it out and my hair is black!!!! with a slight purple hue :(

I guess I left it on for too long right??

perhaps I should have only left it on for 30 minutes to an hour max for the silver

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. Silver hair is so hard to achieve and to maintain. It's basically through trail and error. Even sometimes when we follow all the instructions from other people and somehow we still didn't get the even silver color we want.

I agreed with Vivienne. BlondeMe is the best bleach to use for your hair. Less damaging and lift better.

Check out this youtube video below...it provides a step by step with the best products to achieve the silver grey everyone wants. It also covers on how to maintain the silver grey color. This is my friends youtube channel. Please like and subscribe if you find this video helpful. :)

I bleached my hair 4 times at home with the BlondeMe bleach, but I separate this bleaching process in 2 separate times...about a 1.5 week apart so my scalp can take a much need break. After the 4th time, I applied the Wella T18 and it's white. They called the T18 "White Lady" for a reason lol. See below to see how white it was.
