Blonde/ White to purple turned GrayPosted 4 years, 4 months ago
Hello everyone, Sorry if this isn't allowed. I looked through the rules and didn't find any other articles that pertained to my problem. So here we go. I've been dying my hair for the past 20 years and really never had this happen. I started off blonde and white, and wanted to go lavender with some dark purple highlights if you will. Well, I used Ion color brilliance Lavender and ion color brilliance purple. The purple looked metalic -ish but i figured other photos online looked purple so maybe thats just the way it looks out of the tube. What i came out with were patches of lavender, teal, gray, silver, brown, ash brown and blonde. Needless to say it was a nightmare. i'll port the time line photos. I then waited a day to re-dye to correct the horrible results the ion brand left me with. I used three different purple mixtures for what I wanted to be a dimensional look. The purples I used were manic panic purple haze, manic panic ultra violet, and N Rage Color purple plum. Personally I love manic panic and it works great with my hair and I've never had a problem even on dark hair its always shown some tone of color (the darker ones that is). As the manic panic is washing out my hair is going back to ash brown and silver-ey gray. Now the lavender/ purple and gray look is cute but just not what I want right now. Any advice on how to correct this? Also the purples are turning out more blue than purple and though are also washing out to a nice periwinkle it is also not what I want at this moment. Plus I'm kinda annoyed at everyone going (in a innocent nice way) nice blue hair. Please any help to keep the ash brown and silver away would be much appreciated. Or any manic panic combos or single dyes themselves that will get me purple not blue.
The last photo is the next day after doing the 3 manic panic purples HOWEVER, this is not the color it looks but the color I want. In my camera it looks sooo purple but in the mirror it's lighter and a bit bluer like a deep periwinkle/ lavender. We are going on week 3 of this mess.
PS I am aware that the N Rage Purple Plum has blue under tones as well as the ultra violet. But even so the purple haze with the red under tones still comes out blueish.

When you say that your hair started off blonde and white, just how blonde are we talking? I'm looking at your pics and I'm perplexed as to how it came out so brown in the lengths if it started on a white blonde base. The only thing I can think of is that maybe there were some orange tones or previous dye in the lengths and the cool blue toned pigments in the purple turned it brown? That's just me taking a wild guess. From what I understand about light but cool pastel shades like lilac or lavender, you need a pretty much uniformly white or pale butter yellow base to start with. Hopefully someone with more experience with pastel tones will offer some more advice because I'm baffled. I'm thinking that colour removers and fading techniques may be your only solution at this point to fade as much of the ion colour out before you try to correct the base. Bleach may turn the purple pigments green otherwise. Best of luck!

So was it dyed brown previously and then bleached? I see the roots are much lighter, especially in the first picture.
If you have a before picture or can tell us a bit more about how your hair was before dyeing it would be very helpful.

trust me the stylist an I were also baffled as to why the ion color brilliance purple saturated areas came out brown and ash brown. But hidden orange tones sounds like a good culprit. I wasn't even thinking of that bc I was so blonde. Thank you! I've been having a lot of trouble with Ion and I think this is the last straw to be honest.

Is there a way to upload a before picture kinda like the timeline or does it have to be a link from like a photo upload site? I could post it on my timeline too if that helps.

Sorry, you can't add photos to topics after they've already been posted, but if you don't want to post it elsewhere, putting it on your timeline is fine, too.

Okay sorry for being kinda a pain but I uploaded a photo of the bleached hair to my timeline. As mentioned it did look brassy in the photo but it was all an even tone of very light blonde like the ends of my bangs. So so sorry for the poor true to life color quality of the photo.

hmm so looking at the timeline photo, and I don't think it was light enough for purple to not go brown, you could fade it all out and then bleach bath till the hair is a medium to light yellow then go over with a better purple dye, (special effects, adore, pravanna, arctic fox, sparks) or you could try to fade out what you have and do a very warm purple, like pimpin special effects, arctic fox violet dream, adore violet gem etc, true blue tones purples go brown over just about anything but really pale blonde

What Dizzinea said. The purples you are using are not only pretty weak dyes as far as pigmentation go, but they are blue based which is countering your brassy blonde turning it brownish. When I was first going purple I did the exact same thing and got the same weird result. I washed it out as much as possible then used Punky Purple and was ecstatic with the outcome :)
Awesome! Thank you so much ladies!!!! Much appreciated.

Is 'punky' the Jerome Russel brand? Do you guys think the punky violet will also work to cover up the ash/brown/grap colour??
