Mauve/Deep purple or deep teal?by RiceCheekyPosted 4 years, 7 months ago
Hi Hair Crazy! First I want to say thank you letting me lurk and gain tons of valuable information to do my hair!
I've lifted from a level 3 to a level 8-9.5 (unevenness, but it is all blended well, I really like it!)
I want to change up the color after letting my hair rest this weekend and I've been stuck between two colors.
A beautiful mauve purple (a bit deeper/darker than the photo) or a deep teal. (see pictures below)
My current color: "thunder and lightening" Toned with ash blue toner with wella cooling violet and some kenra 8sm to put some silver into the 9.5 areas. Pix #3 It is lighter in the sun (of course). This is with awful fluorescent basement lighting. It other lights the silver bits look Targaryen white!
Question 1: Is my hair light enough to deposit the colors I wanted? It's been through some heavy processing since my natural and recolored (box dye) was essentially dark. But luckily my hair lightens super easily.
Question 2: What/how would be achieve the purple color (suggestions of brands and ratio mixes)?
Question 3: Of the two colors, which will fade into a nicer color? (Pastel purple/pink vs green) Which do you prefer for my skin tone? (lighter, cooler skin tone, think porcelain asian skin tone)
Question 4: I want a rootier look when I put in the color. What is the best way to darken a color? Is black hairdye to darken a bad idea?
Again, thank you so much!

I'd go with teal first, just because it's pretty easy to go over teal to make purple, but a bit harder to do it the other way around. That way, it's easier to correct it if you don't like it. Your base should be fine for both of them. Both teal and purple are colours are that suit basically everyone, so either choice should work fine. In my opinion, teal fades a little nicer, since it goes green, then minty, whereas purple can look a bit murky if your base isn't perfect, but honestly, if you use a good dye and don't shampoo every day, you can easily get 3-4 months out of a dye before it starts looking dodgy, if not more, and by that time, you might already want something else.
You say you want the purple to be a little deeper, but I assume you still want to keep the warm tone. Adore Purple Rage, Punky Plum, Sparks Purple Passion, Pravana Violet, and Special Effects Deep Purple or Pimpin Purple should all work very well. For all of them, you'll want to mix with at least equal parts conditioner, as they'll be completely black to start otherwise.
As for darkening the dyes, I'd probably just throw them over what you have now, since it seems like you have a bit of natural roots coming in. Dark roots go very well with basically everything, so it's quite low maintainence. If you meant that you'd like to have a darker version of the colour at your roots, I'd just dilute the dye a little less for that portion.
EDIT: I also forgot, if you get one of the purples I mentioned and find it's too bright, Punky Ebony or Adore Blue Black are great for making purples a little more dusty.

Suggest the Teal first like my colleague indicated easier to go from Teal to a Purple. Teal or purple would cover over the current base hair color.
