Hi all. So I've been dying my hair with semi-permanents for ~4 months (and using the info on this site for everything). I'm a college student with a very busy schedule. A bit about my hair history: I began with chin length virgin, level 2-3 dark hair. A friend of mine helped me bleach half of my hair once with 40 vol and again with 20 vol to get a light blonde for bright red, then the other half with 20 vol for dark purple. I bleached my roots myself every 3 weeks (my hair growths ~1 inch per month), for a couple months before getting sick of the time required for that, but I hate the dark line that appears when my roots grow in. To fix it, I let it grow out for a while, then bleach bathed my roots to create a blonde to dark gradient to my virgin roots, so that I could leave them alone for much longer without getting annoyed. I also struggle to get dye to stick to newly dyed roots. I then began fading out both sides of my hair, then bleach bathed the darker half until it was the same shade as the other side (3 processes of ~10 vol in 1 month). Finally I went all purple, with a mix of everything of several things (pravana violet and wild orchid, directions pillarbox red, special effects wildflower, and Adore royal blue). I used the Adore royal blue (with a drop of pravana violet to prevent a green fade) on the gradient I had created from my roots into my lengths. I ended up with a very lovely black blue that faded into my bright purple lengths. However, the blue faded very quickly, leaving me with a silvery band where the gradient meets the purple (with a blonde base), and exposing patches of light brown.
My goal is to have hair that I only touch up occasionally (once every month maybe). I love the dark blue "shadow root" so much that I'd like to continue doing that. Next time I touch up my roots, I plan on opening the cuticle with a 10 vol peroxide first to help absorb more dye. However I'd still like a dye with better lasting power. I have a couple of ideas: find a black-blue dye with strong lasting power, or find a normal blue with good sticking power and mix it with a bit of a black semi. What dyes would you guys recommend? What do you think would work best?

Can you post a photo of your current hair and how dark a blue you're looking for? There are instructions on how to do that in the link below. Based on only your description, I'd suggest Adore Blue Black. It's definitely a noticeable blue and will look black over brown roots, but it's more of a dusky grey-blue, so not as bright as something like Royal Navy, so you might need to mix something else in to get it to blend well. I will say, Adore dyes don't stick very well to virgin hair at all, in my experience and also suffer from the problem where they don't always take well to freshly-lightened roots. If you had to mix in a stronger blue, I like Directions Neon Blue and Special Effects Electric Blue (Blue Velvet is a bit too violet).

Thanks for your response! I'm not worried about dye sticking to my virgin hair, just to the bleached bits that fade out the dark virgin color into the blonde base on my lengths. http://i63.tinypic.com/2h320rp.jpg

I'd give Blue Black a try, maybe mixed with one of the dyes I mentioned. I think it'll go nicely with your roots and blend well into the purple. You could also try mixing in Punky Ebony instead of Blue Black.
I'm wondering if I had gotten a weird bottle of Royal Navy when I used it last. I remember it having pretty good lasting power, but recently, several people have been saying that it didn't last for them.
