I am thinking of taking the plunge and finally using my SFX Blue Velvet for something other than a pastel.
(Goal color pic & current color attached)I know my hair right now is too orange, but I'd like to not have to go to inside of a banana peel color for such a dark color goal.
Also, I really want to do this so I hopefully don't stain my hair permanently with it & I know BV is super pigmented. I'd also like to know if there's anything I can do before during or after dying, other than dilute the dye, to help with getting the color out later?
So, what base is the best base for SFX Blue Velvet?

I got this colour with at least half diluted blue velvet, over faded turquoise, and my base was yellow blonde. Even then purple tones were too obvious. It didn't last forever on my hair, I was afraid it won't go away from what I've read but honestly it faded in a normal rate for me. I don't know how your orange tones is going to affect it, I believe it will be more muted and not muddy (just a hunch) but you definitely don't need to be white blonde for such a blue with it. It should be closer to violet than blue over a white base. Maybe I had a weirder batch or something, but the point is that is is very different, more pigmented and more purple-based than lots of blue dyes out there!

In judging based on how the photo looks on my phone, but I'd honestly just try a strand test with how it is now. It might be a little muted, but see how you like it. As for staining, I don't think there's much to do other than diluting it. It does fade fairly silvery, so at least it's easy-ish to cover.

Don't leave it on for long, and apply to conditioned hair if you don't want it to last. I do all my strand tests on hair that has had silicone free conditioner and coconut oil on and the colours wash off much faster than when applied to clean hair. It hasn't lasted crazy long on my hair, in fact it washed out really quickly when I had BV diluted on my ends, although it was lighter than the colour in the pic to begin with. I don't think the new formula is a s crazily pigmented as it used to be

Thank you soooooo much for the advice @zoe_nwobhm & @vivienne & @Wicked_Pixie!
I tried a test strand on the darker orange bits and it went brown. So now I am sitting with shimmer lights in my hair (thanks @NLeigh for posting about using that!), since it worked so well for getting out the paprika in NLeigh's hair :D

Ahhhh yes, haha. The stubborn Paprika. (Vampire Red can be pretty stubborn too, I'm afraid.) Hope this works for you!

I was actually able to get most if not all of the Vampire Red out with about 5 normal shampoo fading caps, thankfully since I was worried about it coming out difficultly too. I think all that's left in my hair to get out now is the paprika and the ginger :)
Can't wait to see how the shimmer lights fading cap will work :D

@whiterabbit it's funny I'm doing my own shimmer lights treatment right now, prepping to go back pinky purple, I'm crossing my fingers for both of us, When I had blue velvet ( for almost a year) I always did it on darker yellow bases and it was a gorgeous blue, I think it's going to be amazing on you, now I'm tempted to revisit it someday myself

I'm currently using blue velvet and as I have a very uneven base(hot roots and a new regrowth bad bleached) I can say that you don't need to be white or banana peel to the color you want. But at least a yellow, as @Dizzinea suggested not to mute the blue. I have a picture showing the different shades on different bases:

The part marked with red is yellow/light yellow(hot roots, so next to the growth is lighter). The part marked green is light orange almost yellow. I have this picture on my timeline, if you want to see it clearly without the marks.
Plus, I dyed it over faded enchanted forest. But my base under it, was that I described.
Also, there's a picture of my roots bleached, on my timeline too. :)
I think I'll never come back to my natural hair color again!

Awe thanks @Dizzinea, I hope it does look good .::fingers crossed.::.! So when I did the Shimmer Lights fading cap it took out the same as a regular shampoo fading cap, which is awesome that it works as well, but didn't take out as much as I'd hoped. I think if my hair was lighter the toning effect plus the amount that comes out would have been more dramatic. Definitely a technique I will try again :)

This looks great! @alicefranco, and that was the sort of color I always got with blue velvet as well, it might be the worlds best blue, damn now I miss it

@AliceFranco, thank you so much for sharing the pic and where the two base colors are, very helpful!

Okay so here's where I'm at now...
I've now done 6 regular shampoo caps + 1 shimmer lights shampoo cap and no more color is coming out :/
So now I'm left in a quandary on what to do from here. Do I: A- do the shampoo+bleach powder+oils method? B- wait until I get my Olaplex next week and bleach? C- any other suggestions?

@Dizzinea I'm in looove with blue velvet! It covers very well. I'm also very excited to use deep purple as well. They are so pigmented. I was thinking they were so expensive. But them I tried it diluted on a strand test. And was amazed with the results. It turned out still dark. I'm so in love with SFX. Sonic green is a little above average, I can't really judge because I used mixed with blue velvet, but deep purple and blue velvet are totally worth the money! =)
I think I'll never come back to my natural hair color again!

@alicefranco Deep Purple is way more pigmented than Blue velvet, so be prepared to be blown away lol @WhiteRabbit, I would try the bleach powder/shampoo/oils method next

I already am! I tried 1 part deep purple to 3 parts conditioner. Still very dark. I'm in awe. :D
I'm actully divided right now. Keeping the blue or going to purple. I'm so excited to go to purple, but the blue/teal is still so bright, is a shame try to fade that, and is only now turning teal, that was actually what I was aiming for when I dyed and it turned blue.
I think I'll never come back to my natural hair color again!

@alice Franco gradient the only choice when you can't decide
@whiterabbit I agree with @wickidpixie it's bleach oil shampoo time
