Going red from greenPosted 5 years, 6 months ago
Hi guys, looking for some colour changing advice here - I've decided to go red from the minty green base i have right now (faded from directions apple + alpine green which was originally over a turquoise blue). But i have no idea if i can go straight to red after bleaching out the fade (i can never seem to get rid of blue/green stained tones in my hair though) or if it will turn a gross muddy colour. Also any advice for a nice deep red colour from directions? I was leaning towards their vermillion red but those of you with more experience might know if another shade would cover green better - I don't really mind if I end up using a pink or orange based red. If it makes any difference i plan on going back to purple once I get through red! Thanks for the tips :3

Can you post a photo of your current hair? It's not unlikely that you might be able to just cover your green directly with red without the need the bleach, saving you some damage.
At the moment my hair looks like this, but a little less saturated~
To be honest I've never considered changing colours without bleaching (except when it happened accidentally of course :P) because my roots grow so quickly i have to at least gently bleach half my head every few months anyway

I highly recommend Directions Rubine - it's my favorite red, a very deep and gorgeous color.
If the minty color is a bit lighter than what's in the photo, you might be able to put Rubine straight over it. But I'd strand test first just to make sure. If it looks a little muddy, try fading some more first.
There's a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn't that kind of the point?
People don't want perfection. They want honesty.
Rubine does look like a lovely colour, I looked at that but I'm a little worried about it fading too quickly and becoming pink because I've noticed a very fast colour change happening with all the colours I've put in to date... I think I'm actually having doubts as to whether I should go red at all - So far I've had only cool colours; purples that have gone pink and blue, blues that have gone green, and now just plain green. I'm going to attach a photo, and any advice as to whether warm red tones would suit me would help with my worrying!
Also my hair colour is a tiny bit duller than that photo but hardly lighter, I think I'll have to at least do some fading before going over it with a new colour.

I would fade first just a little, I think a cooler toned red would be better on you, and easier to cover green which I really like on you by the way
Thank Dizzinea - i was pretty happy with the colour, had no idea what to expect because i mixed the greens completely randomly and it didnt go as planned :P
It feels like a silly question but what exactly do you mean by a cool toned red? I cant remember enough art classes to recall if it just means pink-based reds or not....

You're right―a cool tone red is more pink based, and warm toned reds are more orange.

Have you tried the fading technique that it bleach powder (no peroxide) + oil + shampoo? It wouldn't hurt to try to pull out just a tiny bit more color before going red. I was able to pull out most of my Punky turquoise with that method, then used a very diluted pink over it to neutralize it a bit. From there I was able to dye my hair copper directly over it.
