    Fried broken hair

    by Venus414

Long haired girls, I had been bleaching with boxed color and had a full head of long blonde hair, got a bleach and tone at city looks salon (they use aveda color) and my hair is just gone, I have grizzlies all the way down, broken off chunks you name it! I don't want to cut it even though it looks quite thin and messed up, wondering about getting the condition back, I will def be using coconut oil and vinegar rinse after reading the forums. I really want to do my roots again, but I am afraid there was a chemical reaction that will happen again. Also my scalp has felt funny since aveda a month ago now almost- that hair color is just awful. I ordered that headband of fake hair and I've tried what feels like every product... Possible culprits for chem reaction? Taking magnesium supplements? Infusium 23 leave in? Anyone know any good leave ins? I am just at a loss for safest color and way to restore my hair health, it was so lovely before! :( any and all tips appreciated very much :)

Long and strong is my goal!

The best thing you can do is cut off the damage, I know it's not what you want to hear but your fried hair won't recover. Keeping damaged hair only continues to ruin your hair- the damage will travel further up the strand.

Protein treatments like Joico K-pak DPR can act as a "band-aid" and make fried hair feel a lot better when used once every 1-2 weeks.

Your scalp might have gotten chemical burns. Any idea what volume peroxide they used? It's not uncommon for salons to use 40 volume on the scalp or use heat with bleaches that say not to. Allergic reactions are always a possibility so make sure you do a path test in the crook of your elbow or behind the ear 24 hrs before bleaching or coloring. Chemical burns are more likely though, unfortunately they are pretty common.

Kinda off topic but what did the colorist say when she/he did this to your hair? Did they even suggest anything or offer to help? Did they ask to cut off any damage? I just don't understand how someone, especially a colorist/stylist, could let a client walk out with hair in that bad of shape.

I agree I'll probably have to get a good cut. :( Beeto, strangely after having a blow out I thought my hair just looked thinner because it was so smooth from a fresh color/blowout and I didn't notice the breakage until the next day and then certainly after washing and combing all the little frizzies popped up. She was definitely trying to hide it, asking if I wanted layers. I rember she washed it a bunch of times too. When I called 2 days later they made me come in and show them the damage, then refunded the price of the color 90. I was so ticked they didn't refund my haircut too that I called back. She offered a free haircut, treatment and I said no I hate you (j/k but you know what I mean) and she refunded the cut and gave me some products to try at home, which I ended up giving to my best friend because I have sworn off aveda products for life. Wondering if I put a temp color over what I have would strengthen it?

A keratin treatment may be able to get your hair looking in better condition but it may be too weak to stand the blow drying and flat ironing. Can you go to another salon and get a consultation? Other than that, cutting is your only option to stop the breakage. Also the longer you hang on to the hair, the more damage you will do to the healthy hair.

I'm in the same position. I don't know what happened to my hair actually but it was growth from when I was pregnant and it's all broken off at the one length. I look like I'm wearing extensions that were badly blended in wink

I find that treatment oils are the best thing for my hair. Coconut oil doesn't work for me but Argan Oil does. I use it each time I wash my hair and it helps keep it smooth and hide the damage.

Personally I'm avoiding keratin. My hair is a bit sensitive to protein and it tends to make it feel crispy which is the opposite of what I want.

Really, I know I just need to chop it off but I don't want to.

I think a combination of adding moisture, avoiding further damage and trying to hide the damage that's there is all you can do other than cutting off the damage.

Re a chemical reaction, usually you'd notice this because there would be heat and even smoke coming from the hair. It could be the stylist used heat on a product that shouldn't have been heated or even the wrong strength peroxide. There could be many reasons why it became damaged.

I avoid keratin too, always just made it crispy. I've been reading about henna glaze I may try that. I actually am weening brestfeeding too and the hormone changes certainly don't help. I know that melatonin for sleep can increase estrogen, also some bc pills. Ppl always said prenatal vitamins but I think that's just bc ppl take them when they have awesome prego hormones. Bc pills can make hair fall, too.. Gelatin? I know this is the site to ask bc ppl clearly live to play with color as much as I do. Mines been every color from black to fire engine red to white and I will say the temp colors def add to the condition, I wish they made blonde colors

Also, I've been using olive oil and then Pantene pro v shampoo and conditioner, thinking the silicone might lock in some of the coconut oils moisture and it def helps with fullness and condition after I wash it out. I smear what's left on my face and it's great stuff! I will share if I discover anything else helpful.

The headband of hair I ordered is called secret extensions they have a website I haven't received it yet. It's fake hair so I don't think it can be colored but daily cheap I think less than 80 for 2 diff headbands. Hoping if I get it cut I won't look like I'm wearing a wig

Just my personal opinion here, but I've never had issues with Aveda products and think pretty highly of them; I do however think Pantene is cheap, silicone-filled garbage, though, and would advise against it. Silicones can prevent moisture from reaching the interior of your hair and actually cause more breakage. If you are looking for a treatment that is not too keratin heavy, I'd suggest Hask Henna N' Placenta. They sell them at Sally Beauty Supply and some grocery and drug stores carry them (I'm assuming you are in the US). I like to leave it on for an hour under a shower cap and warmed with a hair dryer. Also, if you are interested in natural semi-permanent colors, Adore makes many different natural shades.

oils and herbs seem to be the best treatment for my damaged hair

my hair loves avocado oil best and I find herbs strengthening I also use castor and coconut often but use avocado more as a leave in. Argan, Meadowfoam, Macadamia and Camelina are other great oils my hair loves.

herbs to try: catnip, amla, burdock, fenugreek, cassia.. so many others

and rinsing with diluted citric acid and maple syrup smooths and detangles and adds shine and closes cuticle.. .damaged hair is very porous so adding acid in your rinse helps balance the ph and porosity

oh and a tiny bit of raw cacao butter for the split ends

I would stay away from silicone anything to be honest! It blocked moisture getting into my hair and cause similar damage. Since avoiding it 90% of the time, i have much better hair!

I totally agree, I gave up silicones entirely and my hair loves me for it. I have had much better growth since giving up silicones, sulphates and heat styling. Not that it makes it grow faster, but I don't get the breakage at the ends any more so it gets longer.

I also agree with Hask Henna n placenta and for a good shampoo that helped me tons would be the matching shampoo. I have the argan oil one but be careful not to use too much of it at once because it intensifies the smell and smells like the inside of a freezer.

At Walgreens I found 4 other ones that smell like mint and chocolate and all other oils, bonus is no sulfates, cones or silicones. They have matching shampoo, conditioner, shines, and deep treatments. They also sell some at Walmart.

My hair was damaged and would break and was in poor condition but I didn't cut it and just babied it. Eight months later I haven't bleached or cut anything more than an inch and use the shampoo religiously (once a week, maybe longer. Just when I felt I wanted to wash my hair.. also try avoiding washing often so your natural oils can 'repair' your hair a little.

    Best of luck.

Thank you so much for the tips, I know everyone tells me Pantene is bad, but it's the only thing that I found helps a little- I was hoping the same way it locks moisture out it might lock it in, I will try the placenta and look into the colors for sure! And aveda might work for some but their bleach and toner both dissolved my previously dry yet strong hair, I know it was both because the bleach was only in my roots and the damage was root to tip, just sharing my experience and feelings. Virgin hair may be different but i had been using box color every month for four year prior with little to no breakage :/ maybe the stylist was just an idiot, but my mind is made up in that area

Those that have sworn off silicone can I ask what shampoos and conditioners you use now? Also leave in or hair shine, pure coconut? I am def open to suggestion. Thank you I just read the rest and I think I better just give them to my brother (who has long hair too lol)

I don't use any shampoo, just conditioner for washing (I use Garnier Ultimate Blends the sleek restorer for washing and tresemme Naturals for conditioning usually) and coconut and/or argan oil (pure argan oil not silicone based oil with a drop of argan oil) as a leave in. I don't think you can blame the Aveda products themselves for your breakage and damage. It sounds to me like they used the toner with too high a level of peroxide, possibly by mistake or because they misjudged the condition of your hair. I would certainly avoid any oxidative dyes on previously processed lengths, bleach damage is cumulative, so it was just the straw that broke the camels back. It is certainly a shame, as there is no need to use an oxidative toner at all. This is why i would never let a salon bleach or colour my hair. I don't even get mine cut in a salon lol.

One of my favorites to use is Garnier 3 in 1 Dry Oil. I use it as a leave in on wet, to smooth frizzies during flat ironing, it can be used on skin and hair and a little goes a LONG way. (too much on dry hair leaves it limp and greasy looking) It adds a nice shine and controls frizzies. If I remember right it has Avocado Oil in it among others and as a plus is really affordable. I think I paid $4 or so for a bottle at Walmart.

I've been trying co-washing but it drives me nuts so I've been cheating a little by adding a squirt or two of shampoo every other wash.

ETA: It contains Avocado, Olive and Shea oils :)

I too use conditioner only sometimes, but another combo that I really really love at the moment is As I Am Coconut Cowash for "shampooing" (can be found at Walmart or Walgreens and maybe Sally's). It completely cleanses the hair without the harsh detergents of Pantene or other similar sulfate-y shampoos.

Then I also use the GVP (generic) version of Matrix Biolage Conditioning balm as my conditioner (can be found in the GVP section at Sally's). This combo has left my damaged hair feeling amazing when I let it dry on its own (when it would usually be a frizzy mess). Best of all-- the routine is completely sulfate and silicone-free!

If you can't use Joico K-Pac, do try the pink Hask Henna-n-Placenta packets you can get at Sally's, for sure! Using them once a week has really improved my hair's feel!

I have to say reading and following certain routines and using products found in this forum has drastically improved my hair in a little over a month's time. I used to have really bad breakage problems, I could run my fingers through my hair and come back with a handful. These days I rarely get more than one or two hairs and need to clean my brush out way less often. :)
