Help please! 1st time dyeing -unsuccessful/dye wont stickby FooshPosted 5 years, 10 months ago
Hi! First time dyeing an unnatural colour - Didn't bleach first because I wanted a deep/dark green, I purchased Directions Alpine and Apple green. My hair is naturally medium/dark brown and very natural - I've only dyed it a couple times before but the last time was like 4 yrs ago. I did some test strands and they came out well enough. I liked Apple more so I started with that, the container says leave for 15 mins but since my hair is darker I left it in for about 30 mins. The results were disappointing, it only tinted my hair. So the next day I tried the Alpine on top and this time left it in for about 90mins. The results were really nice! That was yesterday -but today when I got out of the shower the dye had faded by so much! It looks like it did when I only had the apple in, just a tint now. Can someone please help me, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong/why it's not sticking to my hair. I'm really disappointed :c
( both times my hair was fresh washed without conditioner and towel dried/damp before i applied the dye and I read the article on first time dyeing unbleached hair after i did the apple :> )

It is really difficult to get dye to stick to healthy natural hair. I would do a short bleach bath ideally to make your hair more porous. This is bleach mixed with peroxide as usual, but then diluted with an equal amount of shampoo and applied to wet hair. As you don't really want to lighten you will only need to leave it on for 5 or 10 minutes. Then apply the dye to dry hair and leave it on much longer, overnight if you can. Also covering and blasting with heat from a hairdryer will help the dye to take.
I did then what I knew then, & when I knew better, I did better.

The base is too dark and the dye wont stick, like trying to find a parking spot at the mall during Christmas the semi-dye is trying to find a place to stain. Less places less lasting ability. One tip might help with on dark hair is do not condition before dying with semi dye, because conditioner prevents and inhibits the dye form staining the hair.

Hey thank you so much! I had half a tub of the alpine left and did as you said. Wrapped it up and left it for 4 hours hitting it with heat from a hairdryer every now and again. The dye stuck a lot better and the colour came out great! Thanks again for your help :>
