Hello everyone! Longtime lurker, but just registered so I can ask a question.
I want to start wearing red lipstick, but I have no idea how to figure out what kind of shade would look good on me. I have cool undertone skin, quite pale and fair, and naturally I'm a brunette.
I keep thinking that somehow the pink/red will clash, especially if I'm wearing blue which is very common for me. Clothing wise I usually stick with darker cool colors - blues, greens and lots of black.
Any makeup mavens here that can help me? I wish someone had a youtube channel for makeup tips for those of us who have crazy hair! I'm lost when it comes to that kind of stuff.
Personally, for myself, I wouldn't wear red with an intense pink. The issue for me (as with a lot of things) isn't the color, but the value. If it were a lighter pink I'd see no problem with a cool-toned red. This is just coming from my interior design perspective so take from it what you will! Have you ever tried plums? I think those would give you the drama and depth you are looking for and they go with nearly everything.
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear...you're a butterfly...and butterflies are free to fly...fly away...
I had the same problem with lipstick and pink hair. I found that fuchsia colors, berry colored reds or reds with pink tones look pretty nice I stayed away from the warm red lipsticks.
Unnatural hair colors are not to be looked down upon, but embraced.
Oh that makes sense actually... I know warm colors do NOT look good on me for sure, but never thought to really go deeper towards the purple spectrum. I need to go find someplace where I can try various colors.
For some reason, in my 35 years on this earth I've just never gotten into lipstick but I want do it now. I do often go with a pinup style so that's why I'm thinking something bold and intense would work well.
I do blue based reds with virgin rose all the time, I think that as long as the red is deeper then it works, but you have to find one that you like on you Pinup is my default, can I suggest two of my fave reds? Occ lip tar in nsfw ( bright cool red) Occ lip tar in vintage ( deep cool red very film noir) Cherries in the snow from revlon ( color has been around since the 50s it's a cool pink based red and I've worn it with neon pink hair and it still looked great)
I went from mostly black hair years ago that i wore a lot of bright red with (lips and clothes) to a pink very similar to yours, and I gave up wearing my red lipsticks. I have similar colouring to you, very pale, blue eyes, naturally dark hair, but I never found a red that really complimented the pink hair. I would definitely try some deeper plum and purple based shades, or go for a colour that is similar to your natural lip colour but more intense.
I did then what I knew then, & when I knew better, I did better.

Fabulous, thank you so much!
If you are looking for a bold retro look, you could also always go with a pale cool-toned bubblegum pink like MAC St. Germaine
If you are looking for a cheap place to start, I would suggest buying a bunch of wet n wild megalast lipsticks. Wear some chapstick under them to keep them from getting too dry (since they are all matte). I decided to try them out since I ended up pitching all my other lipsticks since I never would wear them and many of them ended up expiring. They are like $2.00 a pop and they actually work really well in my opinion. I wear them to work all the time and they usually last a long time. If you buy a color you don't like or don't end up wearing them in the long run, at least it's not much of a loss.

I agree, I normally use that and mix with pervette, to have a cool purple tone
I think any deeper, cool-toned shade could work. Maybe you could pick up about three or four cheap drugstore lipsticks in different 'categories', for example a darker red berry colour, a deeper, pink based red, a cooler toned true red and maybe something that has more of a purple/plum thing going on, so you can find out what you like best on yourself. You could maybe even mix them to get closer to your perfect shade, and once you have a good idea of what you want, you could invest in a better lipstick. (I totally recommend those 2-step things where you have sort of a very pigmented liquid colour and a balm to put over it once dry. Some are better than others but they generally last an entire day and don't leave marks on anything. You just put them on in the morning and don't bother about them for the rest of the day. They were the perfect solution for me - I couldn't stand having to fix my lipstick 5 times a day.)
Alright here is my update. So far I've tried two colors. First One was Urban Decay F Bomb. I loved the color but I think because I picked it out when my hair was pretty faded it doesn't look as good now. I also bought Wet N Wild Megalast in Stoplight which is a little brighter and more berry tones so looks better with my newly dyed hair. I'll post a pic in my gallery as soon as I'm able.
I'm a red lipstick FREAK. I don't wear a lot of makeup and I don't usually care much about makeup, but I have entirely too many red lipsticks! I'm always on the hunt for the "perfect" red lipstick.
I second the idea for buying a few cheap lipsticks to try. That way you'll get a better idea of what you like and what looks good. Wet n Wild is always a good choice for this, and e.l.f. makes some decent cheap lipsticks for around $1 or $2.
Also, my daughter discovered Sephora not too long ago... (UGH) WAY too expensive for us normally, but we've gone in a few times and I've tried out some of the tester lipsticks in different shades. (Kinda gross, I know, but I'm a lipstick junkie...) I've actually purchased 3 of their cheaper lipsticks each time we went in, and I love them. $8 - $12 for a lipstick is something that I NEVER thought I'd pay, but I couldn't help myself... :/
