Our Photo Policy Explained
What's the Difference Between Galleries and Timelines?
Timelines are a place where you can document your hair progressions, keep notes on your previous styles and colours and view everyone else's style through the months and years.
Since timelines are for everyone, we're not as strict about what type of photos you can upload but we do still have some stipulations which you can read below.
The Galleries are for the best-of-the-best. Our moderators hand-pick the best photos from all images uploaded for the galleries. Since we have tens of thousands of photos uploaded each year, we showcase just the best few in the gallery.
Why are Photos Sometimes Removed?
Each and every photo uploaded is checked by one of our moderators. While we have fewer restrictions on timeline images than gallery photos, we do still perform some checks for quality control and to prevent copyright infringement:
- Altered Photos
Photos that have been digitally altered are not permitted. To keep the consistency of the site we do not allow images that have had filters applied (e.g. Instagram), or any image where the colour has been changed. This is a site about hair colour after all, so we want to see the real outcome of your hair dyeing experience. For this reason, we will also remove images where the contrast/colour intensity has been increased.
We don't allow photos that have had writing, frames, watermarks etc. applied for the same reasons of consistency throughout the site.
You can make small changes to your image such as cropping, minor white balance adjustments, zit removal as long as it has a low impact on the overall image. If you airbrush your whole face we'll count that as a major edit and remove the photo ;)
- Wrong Orientation
Was your photo uploaded sideways? Then we'll remove it. We recommend you open your photo in an image editing program to check its orientation before uploading.
- Irrelevant Content
Do we think your kitten is cute? Yes, it probably is. But if your photo isn't showing your hair then save it for Facebook. HairCrazy's server costs are high and every photo uploaded takes up valuable disc space, so make sure it's actually a photo of your hair.
- Poor Quality
If your image is dark and/or very grainy, or if it's blurry then we'll remove it.
- Copyright Infringement
We have a zero-tolerance policy on copyright infringement. If you didn't take the photo or the rights to the photo weren't signed over to you, then you may not upload it here. If we suspect copyright infringement we will remove the image without hesitation. Anyone who repeatedly uploads copyrighted material will have their account suspended.
Please understand that every photo uploaded effectively costs us money so if your photo is not contributing to the site in some way we will remove it.
How does a Photo get Selected for the Gallery?
We hand pick the best photos uploaded to the site and add them to our galleries. Not only are the gallery photos images of great hair, they're also great quality images.
Here's what we look for in a gallery quality photo:
- Photos that show your hair well and include your face
- Pictures taken in natural light with an uncomplicated background
What's meant by that is that the background doesn't detract from you and your hair. For example, it's better to have a park or garden in the background than a pile of dirty laundry and an unmade bed ;)
- Well-framed image
The photo shows your head and shoulders and your head is not chopped off at the top or sides of the image.
- High-Resolution Photos
Mobile phone cameras are great, but if the picture wasn't taken in optimum conditions then it tends to look grainy at full-size. For best results we recommend you use a camera for your hair photos or take your photos outside. Unfortunately webcam photos are always too low-quality for the gallery.
